Skills vs. Qualifications

So all employers have their minimal requirements for the position in which you are applying, some meet standards others may not but when that person claims to be the "qualified candidate" thus the work week begins for this new employee and two months down the line you start to realize that maybe this individual wasn't all they made themselves out to be. Just cause a person tells you what you want to hear during an interview shouldn't be the only option. To sum it all out - Is it possible to actually put you to the test? During the time I did my volunteer services with no degrees on hand I noticed that I had more qualifications about the job then this person with the Bachelor's or Associates degree. Interviewing isn't my strongest aspect, I may not be able to give you the qualifications you require (verbally) but I GUARANTEE if given the opportunity to SHOW YOU THAT I CAN GET THE JOB DONE (physically) basically put your capabilities(money) where you're mouth is it would be a whole different ball game. Do recruiters ever feel that maybe they should be allowed to have other options by means of hiring"the rite candidates"?

The trick to getting a job

There are no tricks. You have to have the experience and the skills that the position is asking for. It pays to read the like to have as this is indicative of what you will be doing and if lucky, learning on the job. If the job posting has a day to day section, what you will be doing on a regular day, or an expects section, then this is what you will be doing. The job is being filled for a specific need. There is no point to applying for a job when you don't have the skillset. If someone emails me for a job and I dont have some of what they are looking for, that's usually a red flag for me. If I have most of what they are looking for, I ask if it would be possible to learn their other requirements. If you are starting a new vocation without professional experience, then for every job, you have to start at the bottom and work your way up. Always dress your best, because when they see you at the interview, they've made up their mind that that is the best you will ever look. If I left some things out, please feel free to chime-in.

Best to you and happy hunting!

I Don't Get It.....

Good Evening, Jobcase Community!

I am aware that many of the members have discussed in great detail about ghosting from hiring managers/companies, not getting the jobs they know they're qualified for/being passed up for another candidate, not getting a call back from prospective companies, etc. It truly is terrible and a pain in the a-- that it happens all the time.

To get to the point, I got a call from my recruiter from a temp agency in Chicago that the hiring managers from a well-known company were very impressed with my credentials, work history, job skills and honesty when answering their interview questions. However, they informed my recruiter that they decided to go with another candidate for a data entry position. My recruiter was disappointed and annoyed by this, but intuition, along with carefully listening to the managers during the interviews, told me that the odds were stacked against me. I also noted that the managers were not seeing eye-to-eye on what duties that would entail with their short-term project (6 months).

Even though they informed the temp agency's manager that they were looking for candidates with data entry and administration assistance experiences, they did not make it clear that they wanted candidates to know how to process Continuing Education Units (CEUs) for people who took workshops with this company nor did they state how many years of experience the candidate needed to qualify. My recruiter said that he and his manager are investigating why this happened, despite receiving overall positive feedback from the managers, and why they did not choose me as their final candidate for the role. There were similar problems with other hiring managers, companies, and other opportunities as well; the same scenario played out, sans recruiters, and rarely receiving a response as to why I did not qualify.

It has gotten to the point now that I believe I would have a better chance moving out of Illinois into another state just to get full-time work or out of the country permanently. Or, start my own business. But, where do I start in that regard? I feel at times that no one wants to help me and views me as a failure and scum, the world's against me, I wasted some years of my life trying to make things work so I can feel accomplished, and I feel like my accomplishments are nothing. Most of all, I feel like the heavens have turned their backs on me and everyone else is doing great and I feel like dung buried in a litter box. I'm trying to stay strong and positive, along with putting on a "strong woman" front, but I am beyond sick and tired of this BS.

Moreover, I have never been in trouble with the law, displayed respect to others, finished college twice, volunteer for various events and for my church, try to eat healthy and incorporate a workout regimen, make drawings on my spare time, spend time with family and friends and network with other professionals to get ahead of the game so I would have a stabler future.

What has become of this job market, the workforce, and when did it become damn near impossible to get a entry-level job?? I don't get it... Sound advice, encouragement, ideas, and networking ideas will be wonderfully accepted. More importantly, do not act like a bonafide jacka-- or a----le who acts like a know-it-all. I have encountered more than a handful of those in the past and told them to go do you-know-what.

I apologize for the last two sentences sounding cynical and disrespectful. Thank you and have a good night, Jobcase Community.

How did you get started in the Software world ?

When I was 13, I started a BBS. I attended a user group called the TRS 80 Nibblers. A gentleman introduced me to his software and from there I modified the software (with his permission of course) and eventually a team of developers got on board and we expanded the software to have chat rooms, hidden discussions, hidden secured shortcut keys, undergrounds.
I was asked to co-sysop bulletin boards in other states. Security was a chief focus as 99E-99 was not just a number back then. But the real surprise were the examinations needed to get in to underground BBS's. You had to have something entrepreneurial that you did that nobody else did. A unique skill. I had a pulse modem and discovered patterns in phones. I spent considerable amount of time at the Lawrence Hall of Science in Berkeley. Eliza was not just a name back them. Now you have AI like Alexa.
Having a Pet was the way to go. Anybody know what happened to the Amiga? I heard that Ted Turner had an Amiga but I'm not sure if it's true. I ended up working for Serious Magic and Ultra became Serious Magic's claim to fame. Shortly after that Adobe acquired Serious Magic. The PDP-11 would cause a serious problem if you missed a ;.
QA base cases are sorely missed. Where are they?
There's a lot more I could say... bubble sorts were pretty cool but they are a thing of the past. SSDT is pretty clever the way it does a merge.
Does anyone miss goto statements? They are actually great for debugging if you remember to take them out of the code before checking the code in. Assembly is the ultimate for putting bytes into registers directly. I studied at UC Santa Cruz Boolean Algebra with the gentleman that one of the foremost C textbooks used. It wasn't Kerningham and Richie. But they were from UC Berkeley. When I was at UC Santa Cruz, AI music composition was the rage with the famous David Jones and other outstanding professors.

Wishing you all of the best and a wonderful night!

One last digression. Use a testability matrix. Will eliminate all problems of communication between developer and QA and will make it easier and more efficient to make sure all unit testing, functional testing, integration testing, and continuous testing is done in the most timely, efficient manner.

GED

I am currently in the middle of trying to acquire my GED. I have three more tests to pass, but i get really discouraged trying to fill out job applications that have the HS diploma or GED information. I feel as though if I say that I dont have my GED, people will be less interested in hiring me or scheduling an interview... even though I am trying to get it and going to classes. Can you guys help with finding jobs that require no experience or GED??? I'm really struggling here.
