Looking for office assistant or data entry clerk work

Here's another pickle I need help with. I worked for a year at a medical office and it's on my resume. I CANNOT land a job offer. I am working with someone to help me interviewing. Rejection after rejection starts to eat away after a while. I'm now working two part time jobs. My pickle? I asked someone to do a reference check for me at my receptionist job. HE WON'T CALL THEM BACK! Could this be hurting me? What do I do? I tried to email him and he never amswered. Please help.
