You can starve some weeks. Your entire weeks check may only covery one required tool purchase for only ONE specific year make and model vehicle you become assigned to work on

Shops may not furnish required tools or any tools at all

Shops may pay close to minimum wage or under double minimum wage while requiring you to furnish your own tools.

Shops like pep boys may falsely advertise $18 hour jobs but as in past may average it down to $9.50 an hour in actuality

Flat rate doesn't pay for your hours cleaning shop, talking to customers, running errands for your boss etc

Mechanical work is extremely labor intensive, hazardous to health long term, damaging to back and joints

Get into drive-ability and diagnose transistorized electronic intermittent faults occuring once a week, give a weeks attention/ troubleshooting and get paid only for one hour.

More money can be made doing vertually anything else with less of your own investment cost, continual growth in technical knowledge and school training cost, physical and psychological demands

Greedy owners who don't want to pay or leave on pay day show up with pay later and ruin your credit

Technicians on commission or flat rate bring dishonest with customers just to break over typical 20k a year mark

For smog techs may suffer huge fines and penalties BAR for one minor overlook or for no mistake at all such as for FRAUDULENT inspections conducted by BAR to trap technicians even though their conduct is sound. This happened to me and I won in court but refused to go back due to Gov corruption
