Tips on refreshing your resume and cover letter

I spent the majority of my day revising my resume with a refresh template and tweaks here and there. And I thought why not write about it? Those who are new to writing your resume - this will be helpful. And for those who feel they need to tweak it so it will stand out - well I might help you with that.

  1. This can be difficult if you've been in the same field for a long time as I have. However, it's important that you don't regurgitate your resume. Instead of repeating yourself, you can use your cover letter to describe additional details that you weren't able to squeeze onto your resume.
  • A cover letter gives you the freedom to use full sentences- instead of bullet points - so use them to expand your bullet points and tell the story of why you're the perfect fit for the company.
  1. Think not what the company can do for you - A common mistake - talking about how great the position would be for you and your resume. Hiring managers are aware of this - and what they really want to know is WHAT YOU'RE GOING TO BRING TO THE TABLE. On that NOTE:

  2. Clearly show what you're capable of - Beyond explaining what you've done in the past - SHOW hiring managers what you can do in the future. When you determine the keys requirements and priorities of the job and make it clear to them that you can deliver the goods on these key things. On your cover letter - and I will implement this as well - you can craft a section within the letter that beings with - Here's specifically I can deliver to this role. And emphasize your strengths in a few of the priority requirements for that role.

  3. Showcase your skills - When you have the potential to do the job - but your past experience doesn't really sell you as the perfect one for the position - I've been there myself. Focus on your skill set instead.

  4. Your education matters but - many new grads make the mistake of over-focusing on their educational background. Many employers who prefer candidates to have degrees will know that you do not have much job experience other than volunteering or the occasional part-time job here and there. Once you begin working - you will realize that there's a huge disconnect between what you learned and how to succeed in college and what you needed to do to succeed at work. So I recommend as a new grad to discuss your work experience that you may have and that you can walk through the door and deliver on Day 1.

  5. I'm in this boat - There's a job that I would love to get but I do not meet all of the job requirements. So what am I do? Well, I certainly won't apologize for any skills that I don't have, so you shouldn't either. I do add in my cover letter - Despite my limited experience with XY&Z, I did learn the basic fundamentals in school which makes me familiar and confident that I can pick it up quickly and learns to add xy&z to my everyday duties. ( Something along those lines).

  6. Highlight the Right Experiences - Not sure what skills or experiences you should be featuring? Drop the text of the job description into the word cloud like Wordle, and see what stands out. That's what hiring managers are looking for most.

  7. In your cover letter, you can tell a story. What brings you to the company? Did the product the company sells make a difference in your life? Stories bring your background and experiences to life, so free feel to tell them but keep them short and to the point.

  8. Consider testimonials - If you have feedback from your former co-workers, bosses or clients -don't be afraid to use it. This is what I consider a form of networking. It's a seamless way to integrate a positive quote from a previous hiring manager to use it as evidence of your passion for your area of expertise.

  9. In a cover letter - don't be overly formal. It makes you seem insincere and even robotic, not friendly, approachable, and awesome to work with.

  10. Think Custom - not Canned - Create a custom cover letter for every company/position you apply for. If you keep it basic that can be used for every position - for example - dear hiring manager, I'm so excited to apply for the open position at your company where I can utilize my skills to progress in my career - blah blah blah. This is what I call a stock letter that has probably been mass-distributed to every place in town. And no offense but they will throw it in the trash.

  11. Start with a Template - There are resume/cover letter templates that you can download for a little as $2.00 or so for a limited amount of time, free downloads, print copies and definitely keep a copy in your email. And you can cancel at any time.

  12. Consider adding a headline - Adding an eye-catching headline to your letter like - 3 reasons I'm an excellent fit for the marketing managing position. This can be an easy way to catch the hiring manager's eye.

  13. Honest, genuine writing always goes much much further than sticking to every dumb rule you've ever read in stale, outdated career guides and college textbooks.

  14. I can't tell you how many cover letter I've read from people who are "absolutely thrilled for the opportunity". Downplay the adverbs a bit and write like a normal person.

  15. Cut the Fluff- Avoid at all costs describing yourself as a team player or people person - instead show off your skills with descriptive statements like I'm an expert communicator with experience beginning together diverse departments to develop programs ( it's longer yeah but it's also stronger)

  16. When you write a cover letter - it's a great way to show a company that you understand the environment and culture of the company and industry and prove they've got what you're looking for. Keep in mind - tailor the cover letter to what you know will get them excited.

  17. Have some fun - Cover letters do not have to be boring - there are plenty of ways to spice it up. Be a little creative - whether you use a spunkier tone, play with formate or make it more visual - will improve your chances of getting a callback. If it's a corporate/mid-level or high-level executive position - stick with a traditional formate but make it more conversational.

  18. Don't be afraid to brag - you have to sell yourself, think of a friend or mentor - someone who would sing your praises then write a letter from their point of view.

  19. Have someone gut check it - have a friend or parent look over your resume/cover letter and ask them one or two questions. Does this sell me as the best person for the job? Does my cover letter/resume get you excited? If the answer is no, or slight hesitation, go back to the drawing board and work on it until you get a yes to both of those questions.

  20. Do including the hiring manager's name on the cover letter - nothing is more generic than to whom it may concern, or dear sir or madam. Unless you don't know it then I would consider - General Manager, District Manager or Senior Analyst Hiring Manager as a few examples.

  21. Edit - No one should have to tell you to edit your resume/cover letter through a spell check but also check the company name, that it's spelled correctly, the address is correct with the phone number etc. I use Hemingway which allows me to drop the text onto the page and the color-coded app will give my writing a once-over, it tells me if my sentence is too wordy, or overly complex or totally unreadable. It highlights in red until I revise it. Great tool.

Last but not least - Care more about standing out - the best piece of cover letter wisdom I can offer you comes from Foss: The most memorable over letters are written by people who care less about the rules and more about standing out to the hiring manager. " Next time you sit down to write a cover letter, vow not to get uptight about all of the rules you've picked up along the way. Instead, buck convention. Be memorable. Nail the stuff that will make you a true standout.

Well, that's that. I hope this has been educational and informative to those who need it. I sure did! So I'm going to take my own advice and write a cover letter for a position that I may or not may not yet. But, you never know unless you try right?

Register with temp agency. That will get you a weekly salary and experience. Stay in Faith and Prayer. God got you!

I stayed positive at my job by

To do what is expected gives a person a sense of achievement and enhances a person's self esteem. 1) I would show up on time, 2) I would do the work that was assigned to me and do it well. 3) I would volunteer to work overtime during sport games on Saturdays 4) I would stay after work a little longer because of sport game clean up 5) I would think of the money I was making that would help to pay the bills. 6) I would save money for the shopping days. 7) I would check that the entrance doors were all locked in order to assure protection for people in the building

WHAT'S HAPPENING ON THE JOB? (10 - Reasons for Termination.) #1. Tardiness

Clients are always looking to hire "top-notch" people that "fits-the-bill," so to speak. That statement goes without explanation to say the least.

Imagine the conversation in the illustration below: Listen...

"He's been late more times in three months that I've been all year long." "Yes sir, I see that and I understand." "Also, he comes back from lunch 10-15 minutes late each day." "Yes, sir." "Tom, what about my PowerPoint slides for $15M construction site bid?" "Sir, I apologize, he didn't have them ready."

Folks, corporate America has no room for consistent tardiness without justification. If this is the case, this type of behavior will send through the front door without a smiling-face or good-bye! Don't allow tardiness to be your downfall on the job.

INTERVIEWS: (No. #1. Mistake To Avoid)

PLEASE READ, VERY IMPORTANT!!!

Perhaps, what could be the No. #1. mistake that people make at interviews? Among the many, let me mention one(1) that stands out from the crowd. Here's the question. "John/Jane Doe, please, tell us a little-bit about yourself?"

This is where people fall-short and lose the winning votes of the board members. So many people are not prepared to respond "properly" to this question. Surveys show that many people often tell their life story, rather than pertinent details which are job related criteria.

Some people start talking and become "long-winded" and losing track of time.

As a result, the board members either become inattentive, bored, sleepy or show a lack of interest in the candidate.

BEST TURNKEY PRINCIPLE: Always be prepared to share your story within a specified timeframe, and most importantly, ensure it's interrelated with your job skills and the position you are applying for.

10 Things to bring on a job interview

It is interview day. You are nervous and your mind is racing. Let's make it easy for you. Here are things that you ABSOLUTELY MUST NOT miss to carry with you to your interview and make a good impression and help you ace the interview.

  1. Your purse/wallet You don’t want to reach the bus stop or the road side to hail a cab and realize that haven’t got any money on you. Even worse would be the cab drops you off at your place of interview and then you realize you forgot your wallet at home. It’s embarrassing and it jeopardizes your performance in the interview.

  2. Copies of your resume and passport size photographs You are going for an interview, not for a tea party. You need to carry clean and tidy copies of your updated resumes. Add in copies of your passport size photographs, some companies do ask you to paste them on the application form that they ask to fill before you go in for the interview and attach your resume with it. Your interviewers might also ask for the resume.

  3. Interview details Carefully take down the details such as; the name of the interviewing manager, address, time and any directions or guidelines you might have been given like whom to ask for upon arrival, where to park, which entrance to take, any specific security provisions, etc. Keep it in mind and prepare accordingly.

  4. Reference Letters You might not always need them, but it is always good to carry at least three good reference letters or letters of recommendations. You can support yourself on that when relevant questions are asked during the course of the interview.

  5. Cell phone Keep your cell phone with you at all times. Don’t forget it anywhere. Keep it on silent mode once you enter the office. And switch it off once you enter the interview. This way you can stay in touch and handle emergency situations while your interviewers can inform you of any delays or problems. You can also call up the office asking for help to find the place, etc.

  6. Work samples Nothing speaks louder than your work in an interview. So if you bring in the best of your work into the interview and show it to the interviewers, there are greater chances they would be impressed with you. Your work shows out your capabilities and skills live, compared to you talking about it and verbally trying to explain it.

  7. Pen People often understate and miss out on understanding the importance of this simple tool. Nothing is more embarrassing and bigger turn off than having to borrow a pen when you are filling out a form or you are in the middle of an interview and the interviewers ask you to write down something. Interviewing managers dislike candidates who are irresponsible enough to forget to bring their own pen. And make sure the pen works fine and smooth. You don’t want to be struggling and coaxing a pen to work when you need it.

  8. Documentation Carry copies of your education certificates and proofs of employment. You might need to attach it to the forms. Or the interviewers just might want to see it.

  9. Grooming tools Your hair is a mess, your face is oily and dusty, your lipstick has worn off, you are having an irritation in your throat. Avoid that. Carry your grooming tools and a mini-make up kit. Carry wet wipes and clean up your face before getting in. Touch up your make up properly. Keep it light, but perfect. Comb your hair, no shabby hair. You don’t want to portray yourself as a lethargic person. Appearances speak a lot, and no matter what who says, it does matter. In fact, it makes your first impression.

  10. Food Interviews get delayed sometimes. You may not be the only candidate the panel is interviewing on the day. The managers got held up in some meeting, or they are running late. Mind well, it is OK for them to run late, but you absolutely shouldn’t do it. When this happens, you don’t want your stomach making funny sounds in the middle of the interview. Keep a protein bar, or a quick light peanut butter sandwich or something light to fill you up quickly. Make sure its not drippy. You don’t want a big fat stain in your bag, creeping over your documents and leaving stains on them, or on your clothes as you are biting in.

If you're driving, make sure the car is full of gas the night before. Try having your bag packed and ready the previous night. Prepare what you want to wear beforehand. Polish your shoes. Carry whatever you think you will need in a convenient bag. You don’t want to be fumbling around for a cell phone in your bag when it starts ringing and it takes you ten minutes to find it. Be presentable and prepared. Don’t let anything mess your confidence or distract you on your interview day.

I get exrltra nervous during interviews

Pleasssssaeeeew help me.....

Hi, this is like the 8th interview have attended in the past 6months and am still no good at it, even though have been reading online concerning how to ace an interview and I usually research the companies before I attend any and even rehearse my responses to any possible question the interviewer may ask but at the end I still end up flopping!!

I once got shortlisted for a job in a major bank down here, with recruitment process that lasted 6months...I aced every stage and even managed to pass the peer to peer interview but when it got to the interview with the panel...it wasn't so good.

I answered questions asked too honestly that I could tell I was fuckibg up inside but couldn't help myself. When asked some questions , I sometimes draw blank before eventually responding with a weak answer at the end I didn't qualify fie the next stage.. It was devastating.

Thing is am hundred percent sure am capable of handling whatever responsibility these jobs entails and contributing even more to their development and would end up being a valuable asset to them eventually but the problem is how to make them see it
