Generalist or Specialist?

A generalist has skills that are varied, and a specialist is one who has a particular field of study. In organizations, generalists tend to have roles that are very loosely defined. A specialist has a role that is narrower and more pronounced. A specialist is someone who is an expert in a certain field of study, occupation or practice. These individuals focus on a certain area or topic and build up an understanding in a specific niche. Which are you? I would consider myself a Generalist, I have worked in several different industries, and I enjoy exploring and learning! If you consider yourself a generalist, click the link below to find an awesome community/forum of other generalists, to connect, and network with!

Analyst at Axiom

Wow! great way to think of your skillset. I think its important to be a generalist in the beginning of your career so you can have enough experience to know what you would enjoy. Once you figure that out, then becoming more of a specialist allows you to hone your skills and talents. I was a generalist but moved into being a specialist.

I am a specialist in what I do because that is where my training lies! Somewhere along the way I was also a generalist who did a lot of things and wore a lot of "hats!" My specialist habits kicked in when I began to delve into more Accounting, Non-Profit Audit work, Cost Accounting work Analyist work of a budget nature and Foresnic Accounting and Fraud Examination work! This is my story and I am sticking with it!

Experience working at Bubbakoos Burritos

It was the worst job I ever had. It was good at the beginning, later when they lost a lot of people that worked there everything started being bad. New manager was so rude and would always give us dirty looks when speaking Spanish. All my coworkers agreed not to work with me in a meeting that never happened according to different coworkers. The manager just told me how he had to do what was best company instead of what was the right thing to do, they fired me because they wanted to keep the supervisor happy, and when I told the manager that it was unfair to fired me because of an immature guy all he says is “life is unfair” I wish none has to experience something like that at a job, here they prefer to lie and do the wrong thing just to make their preferred employees happy.
