Entitlement Mentality
I read some of the rants and raves on here about corporate America doesn't care, etc that I have to share a story. When I was a college co-op student at a steel and iron foundry in 1974, I noticed a foreman who had lost his arm at the shoulder. I asked someone how it happened and he said it was in an accident at the foundry a few years before. He added that when the GM went to see the fellow at the hospital the next day, the foreman asked one question: "Do I still have a job?" The GM said "you have a job as long as you want". And they honored that, no legal suit, no disability claim, etc. Back then, people were happy to have a job irregardless of the circumstances and they sucked it up. Just like I was. It wasn't always fair maybe, and people at the top still made a lot of money, but there wasn't the "I expect a handout" attitude.

What should I do?
I’ve been working at the same pizza shop since I graduated from high school. It’s a small family owned restaurant. I’ve been there so long that the owner consider me like another family member. I learned a lot about cooking, running a business, and dealing with customers during my time working there and I appreciate all the guidance and schedule flexibility the owner has given me throughout the years. The owner is getting up there in age and wants to slow down so he’s been handing over more of the day to day business operations over to me this summer. Last week he approached me with a General Manager offer. The bump in pay is great but the job doesn’t include any health benefits. He say’s the business can’t financially support paying health benefits for me and the other 4 FT employee’s who work in the restaurant. My girlfriend and I are planning to start a family soon and I can’t risk taking on a new job role with no health insurance. It breaks my heart to have to decline the owners job offer but I’m eventually going to have to move onto another job with benefits. Does anyone know of another affordable health insurance option I can purchase independently or as a group if the other employees decide to sign up with me as well?

General manger
I am currently seeking a more lucrative position right now where I can grow and develop.

Night Store Director
I am currently seeking a management position in the Northwest Indiana/ Southwest Michigan area. I have 12 years of management experience in the restaurant business and the large retail/grocery store business. The reason for my search is to get off of 3rd shift, as it has become physically exhausting, and it has made fatherhood very difficult with a quickly-growing son. At this point, I will take anything that matches my current wage of $60,000/year and does not require you to work overnights. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have 10+ years of solid retail experience so why do I need a college degree to get a GM promotion?
I started working in retail as a Customer Service Associate over 10 years ago and worked my way up a Department Manager but now I’m not being considered as a serious candidate for a General Manager position because I don’t have a college degree. This is the 3rd time I’ve applied and been turned down for the position. All of the previous store managers since the time I started working in retail were applauded for working their way up into General Manager roles. It was considered to be a great accomplishment. Recently the company has been hiring GM’s right out of college. These jobs used to be good career alternatives for people who didn’t want to go to college so what changed and why??
