My biggest challenge I overcame at work was...

The biggest challenge for myself was being from the valley and now working in a small town in the international border. Being I don't speak Spanish it made it a little more difficult to communicate at times, but you find a way regardless. Everybody understands kindness in any language.

When you don't like your job..

Everyone has had a job they didn't like at least once or twice. If you ask 10 people if they like their job, more than half would say they didn't. So I ask, if you don't like your job, how can you work and do it well? We all need money and in order to get it, this means we are doing something we don't like doing and therefore are unhappy.

Some people can afford to quit their jobs, I know I've done it. I was unhappy with my boss who was screwing me around with my hours. He made me felt like he didn't value my time or myself as an employee. So I quit, used my money in savings to get by a couple of months and found something else.

So what if you are one of the majority of people who need work? Day after day, often doing something you don't love doing? You can't afford to quit, and you may not even know what you want to do and what will really make you happy and satisfied.

If you find yourself in this situation, there are a few thing you can do to bring happiness and satisfaction into your life.

You can decide to excel in your job and do everything to get promoted. (Focusing on your mind in your job in this way can make it easier to bear it, and who knows, you might start liking it)

Wake up early and meditate or exercise for 20-30 minutes before heading to work

You continue working but at the same time, find time to learn a new skill.

Read inspiring quotes that will keep you inspired and make you feel better about your workday.

Find something you love doing in your free time. This will be the highlight of your day and something to look forward to.

If you can take breaks at work - exercise or take a walk.

Try to do the same work in a different way - if possible, change your routine.

If you really want to change your life, continue working but use creative visualization and affirmations. I have found that these are great mental tools that can change your life.

Learn to change your attitude toward your work and toward the people who work with you. This isn't easy but if you make the decision, you will eventually get results. Resentment and unhappiness hurts your health and is unnecessary. With a change of attitude, you will feel better and stop hating or resenting your job.

These are just a few things I've done and that you can do when you don't like your job. I hope they help you, or at least open your mind to other ways or things that you can do.

Our Culture and empowerment to do the right thing even on the frontline!

After working in private industry for 30 years, I had the remarkably good fortune of getting hired by Southwest Airlines! Without a doubt, THE best Company to be with as an Employee and as a Customer. From the top to the frontline, SWA treats everyone of us as Family, valuing and practicing The Golden Rule, and embracing having Fun in the workplace. Excellent benefits package which includes not just competitive healthcare, but dollar for dollar 401k match up to 9.3% contribution, and unlimited flight benefits to all 100+ SWA cities. And if you are like me, retired from Southwest with 10 years of service, the same unlimited flight benefits for life! Yes, Southwest Airlines is a quality Customer Service Company that just happens to be in the airline business!

About the culture...

Get the inside scoop on what a company is ALL about by asking these questions during your next interview or at a job fair! This will help to determine if their work culture is right for you.

-Where do the people who work here usually eat their lunch? Are they eating while they work at their desks? Do they offer a common area to share their lunch time? Do they go out for lunch together? Figuring out how employees spend their lunch will tell you whether they are slammed with work, don’t want to spend time with their colleagues, and if they enjoy each other’s company.

-Would it be alright to take a quick tour? Environment is KEY here, so be sure to take it all in if they offer a tour and observe all that you can. This is the place you will be every day if you are hired. As you look around, are individuals interacting with one another? Do the workers look stressed? Is the break/lunch room decorated/clean? Does it give you a good vibe or a negative one?

-How do you measure success? Is your future employer going to have unrealistic expectations? Make sure you feel confident to go after what they explain they will be expecting of you. If you aren’t then this might not be the right place for you. An employer that demands LONG work days, for example, may not be a good fit, but if you are a workaholic then it will be a perfect fit for you!

-What are some past company outings or events that you’ve had? This will reveal if they are all work and no play as well as how they treat their employees. Do they offer professional development? What kinds of activities have they done previously? A company will most likely have a holiday party at the very least, but I have worked for some that did not, and as it turns out the employees weren’t truly valued. This is so important! If you want to work for an employer who takes care of their employees be sure to ask this question.

Good luck with any future interviews you have coming up!!

Frustrated Employee

I have a Bachelors in Science and am a licensed Veterinary Technician. I love the job. I'm passionate about it. However, I have found it difficult to find a place to work where employees are respected and nourished by the employer. It seems to be a trend in the veterinary field, or at least that has been my experience. I have searched everywhere that is within a reasonable distance from me and can find nothing else. I'm almost to the point of changing careers in the hopes of finding something better. I really just don't know what direction to take. I could go back to school and get a masters in Biology and maybe have more options, or do something completely different. However, I wouldn't want to end up in school for another 4 yrs. I guess I want a quicker fix. And right now, moving doesn't seem feasible.

Confused...

I’ve been seeking work for a month now. I recently quit my last job due to very dangerous work environment that caused me to have anxiety attacks, panic attacks, stress, and depression. Something has happened to me that caused me to worry about if I was going to make it home in the morning.

I am venturing off into different areas of work, but I can’t get very excited about them. I don’t want to waste anyone’s time, or my time, going through the interview process for a company I can’t find any interest in. I don’t want to show up to some job I hate everyday just for a paycheck.

I want to find work that is satisfying, interesting, challenging, rewarding, and allows me to help others. I’m a very empathetic person, a great listener, and I’m a person who doesn’t take things I hear or see at face value. I like to research and formulate my own thoughts, opinions, beliefs, etc...I like to be physically active. I’ve had jobs in the past, example: Administrative Assistant, Front desk receptionist, and sales, and these types of jobs drive me nuts! I don’t like to sit for long periods of time. I don’t like to be around a lot of people I don’t know. I have very high anxiety and being in a restaurant or convenience store puts me on edge and I can’t concentrate on anything but bad things that could possibly happen. This got worse after I was held up at gunpoint a few months back. I don’t mind working by myself because I tend to start a project and I don’t like to stop until it is accurate. I am very detail oriented and I don’t mind change in the company culture. Also, I take time management, seriously.

Given what information I have laid out in this post, what would you think would be some jobs would be a good fit for me? I’m being very picky about my job search. I’m literally spending over 4-8 hours a day searching for jobs, scrolling through employee reviews, creating different types of resumes and cover letters. I am having success with employers reaching out, but I just can’t get excited or interested in these companies. What should I do if I can’t figure out what I want to do? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Jobs for introverts

I'm someone who has autisim (well asperbergs) and anxiety, I'm also a introvert who hates group projects and small talk (specifically phone calls). Is there any type of job that doesn't have to deal with those 3 things? Just curious.
