It appears that the most important thing for you to do is to get your juvenile record expunged. Consult with a lawyer. If you cannot afford one, go to your local courthouse and get directed to an office that does that work pro bono. Good luck.

Their words are total nonsense. That happens on Jobcase OFTEN. The FTC has Federal Regulations about steps you may take. "• An employer must take certain steps before they decide not to hire, keep, or promote you because of something in the report. They must give you a copy of the report and a “Summary of Rights” that tells you how to contact the background reporting company." Don't expect anything though. Jobcase has run this scam OFTEN.

See if they can give you any idea of how you can get the job. Alternately, you might need to try another line of work, such as retail or restaurants. Go to your city's community college and see if they can help you find something else you can do. You may need to get a certificate or somesuch, but it will be worth it. And, yes, always be upfront with this info, and try not to downplay it, i.e., it was a misdemeanor but became a felony. Good luck! Job hunting is the pits. We should get extra credit for getting through it.

Really sorry to hear what happened. We have a supportive community for #fairchance job search and lots of members shared knowledgeable insights regarding background checks. Normally it should not go beyond 7 years. Considering your records are so far back ago, you should be able to take some action to update your record. Here is a helpful tip from other member @Francisco Ortiz:

Contact Lexis Nexus that’s the company that does the background checks for almost all companies. Ask them what they are reporting. I called had it resolved directly with them for an event that was expunged. I was surprised that it even came up and pissed off since it was expunged 24 years ago. They still had not updated records from the expungement. In the end they removed it and I got a confirmation letter from them. Hope that helps you and anyone else reading this.

I hope it helps. You can also check out our second chances resource center to explore more suggestions and job search tips. Let us know if you have any other question!
