To get one for free, I think you have to prove that you are destitute and possibly homeless or at least staying in a shelter or maybe govt housing. Otherwise, discounted passes might be available to students but youd have to have proof that you are one. Or...since you are working, you could buy one. Most bus companies have daily, weekly, and monthly passes.
Where are you ? New Jersey has a program thru unemployment and /or social servivces. I belive its called Work Force NJ
Call your local 211 number in your area and look for agencies that help with that. Good luck!
