Can a locksmith re-key a locked safe that I have lost the key to? Looking for some contacts here in Toronto
Yes, an experienced safe locksmith (as distinct from an auto locksmith) can craft a new replacement key for your particular safe. This process is similar to that of replacing house keys or replacing car keys, though as you may guess the process is somewhat more difficult. The locksmith will need to examine your safe to see if they will be able to fashion you a new replacement key.
In lieu of this, a locksmith can assist you in contacting the safe manufacturer to see if they can be of assistance in getting you a replacement key to help you unlock your safe that does not have a key.
As an aside, there are also other options available to access a safe without a key. All locks can be picked, though depending on the type and complexity of the locking mechanism, this option may still require professional assistance and/or special tools. Safe bouncing or safe manipulation may be an option depending on the type and size of the safe, and involves jostling the internal locking mechanism to the unlocked position. The upshot is all locks can be picked, even safe locks, though opening safes which are not your own property is of course illegal and not cool.
