Begin associating with people who do for a living what you are interested in doing. Volunteer to help out without pay, if you can afford to do so, or to take an entry-level position. Genuine interest and enthusiasm can take you far!

You are an attractive woman and you can sell yourself. Getting a new career at this age will boost your morale and make you more confident. Besides, once you start working on the job, you can initiate new things and work your way forward. This will be a good start-up plan.

I too am 53- had to leave my office manager job for my Husband's job. I'm finding a total uphill battle trying to even an interview... I have over 20+ys experience but NO "degree". I hate the thought of school for what I've already been doing... Decide What you want to do & Good Luck!!

Hi Sandra, Great questions! To start a career - at any age - I would suggest that you ask yourself a few things: what field am I most interested in? do I want to be in an office, outside, work with children/adults/elderly adults? do I need full-time or part-time? do I need to find a job immediately or do I have some time to decide? can I travel for work?

Since there are so many things to consider, it helps to write down all of your thoughts. You will start to see a pattern emerging and you'll be able to compare the items on it to job listings you see on this site. Remember to be as flexible as possible when considering different types of jobs. The more open you are to different things, the greater number of options you'll have.

Finally, once you find something that looks interesting, then you should apply! Follow up with a phone call or email to the manager or HR department to show them how interested you are. And don't forget: keep trying!! Employers are always looking for good talent, so if you're tenacious, you'll succeed.

Good luck & let us know how it goes! Marijoy

I am 50 and I have started my research. Not only am I looking for a new career, I am looking for another state to do it in. I have been in the library so much these past two months: I think the librarians know my name.
