What experience do I need to be hired as a Medical Records Clerk?

Carolyn: You usually have to have a 6-12 training degree at a technical college or actual experience earned at a job. You could volunteer somewhere to gain the experience. Then you have to type at least 50 wpm and know computers, data entry, etc.

Knowing which computer system the organization uses will greatly help. You could then look up some tutorials online. It also helps if you've ever worked somewhere filing and categorizing, such as in another office or a library or bookstore. Don't forget your people skills, either, and always remember that it's individuals' records you'll be working with, so go big on details and accuracy. It means a lot to the patients, nurses and doctors to have correct information.

Really depends on the company hiring. Are they willing to train some one with no experience, and what are they looking for? There are many different roles as a medical records clerk. When I started as a medical record clerk I had no experience in that department. I did work at the hospital , and knew the computer system. The team there was AMAZING, and we all worked together as a team. They really helped me, and trained me in every aspect of that position. Do your research, and see what computer system they use. Make your self familiar with it. Learn as much as you can before the interview. Maybe shadow someone if possible. Most of all be honest in the interview. Let them know you have done your research, that you are excited to be a part of the team, and learn more.
