Make sure you get a BS in MT or CLS. Get your ASCP certification. Work up to lead tech, supervisor, then manager or director. There's not much else above that unfortunately.

I agree with Heidi and also consider other roles outside of laboratories. I've also done pharmaceutical development and project management.
