You need to be familiar with electric, pnuematics, hydraulics, PPE, etc. and all the tools associated so you can diagnose issues and do preventive maintenance. Study the system you work in and follow all PM's because its always double the work to fix a break down. Welding is also a desireable traight for most maintenance techs.

You don't particularly have to be a master at any "One" skill or trade but do have to be aware and somewhat familiar with all of them. Electrical, plumbing, painting 'construction work, down to the finish work finalization of a job well done. In general just being well-rounded and very patient

The answers about degrees is BS unless you want to be an Engineer. You must have a mechanic background or electrical background or your wasting your time. Aptitude tests for entry level positions usually weed out book smart individuals for hourly positions. Real nut and bolt experience is required unless you have actual apprenticeship certs.

I require both for my maintenance team.

Thats the issue at hand right now.

I see a lot of book smart individuals with screen knowledge apply. But they have trouble communicating and making their hands work.

Take a job out in the field, construction, or service, gather knowledge.

Start an apprenticeship for electrical.

Then after you have applied knowledge, think about maintenance work.

Start with spelling and work into your mechanical skills. Nobody will take you seriously if your grammar and spelling aren’t up to snuff.
