What training do I need to get qualified for a Dispatcher job?

Applicant needs to be alert, good handwriting a must. In addition, a dispatcher needs to know call sign relevant to policy- all! Must know when to call 911 a how to direct them to critical points at his plant. Punctuality a given, no one enjoys waiting on relief at end of day!

We did in the job training.

Also depends on what kind of dispatching I worked for a tow truck company

In Cali you have to be EMD certified or EMT certified to be on the radio. Costs about $450 for a 4 day class.

My training was primarily on the job training. Some agencies require you to go through AAPCO dispatch training or NENA training. If you are going to dispatch fire as well as police most agencies require Emergency Medical Dispatch training. These trainings will require 2 year recertification. State of Florida requires licensing for dispatchers. This is also every two year recert.

As a 911 Dispatch you will get OJT and go thru a Dispatcher Academy usually

Wendy I was a dispatcher for a transportation company for many years. Not 911. Experience and mental stability in stressful situations helps

I was a project manager for many years and I am retired . I would really like to be a dispatcher ie 911 or such how do you find out about those positions?

Hi @Kathleen. (Kate) Baird. There are no strict training requirements for becoming an emergency dispatcher. Many enter the career with only a high school diploma or the equivalent and complete three to six months of on-the-job training. In some states, emergency dispatchers are required to complete formal training.
What skills are needed to become a dispatcher?
Documentation. Data entry. Telephone. Listening and verbal communication. High energy level. Dependability. Multi-tasking. Emotional control.
I worked burglary, fire, police dispatch and overflow. Ability to work under pressure, eye for detail and a passion to assist in urgent situations.
