
What skills do I need to get hired as a Caregiver?

You have to have a real desire to help people who truly need you. Compassion, understanding & patience are vital. When you get hired by an agency, they will provide all you need for your training. You have to be able to pass a background check. You have to be finger printed. Also, you must go in for a TB Test and pass. They will send you to get your certificates for First Aid, CPR, Dementia and Alzheimer’s training, as well. The classes are fairly easy. The whole process takes about 2 or 3 weeks, in total.

You need to pass a background check, in most instances pass a drug screen, be tb tested , in some instances fbi fingerprinted and or bonded. Cpr and aed certified. Most employers who require training or classes will provide that training paid. Usually you need to have reliable insured transportation. I have a chauffers license in case you need to transport to or from appointments etc. Most of all you need to be compassionate, understanding and empathetic. A clean sense of humor goes a long way sometimes. You need to be well spoken, well dressed and possess housekeeping skills, cooking skills, be able to read and understand individual care plans and adhere to them. You need to have first aid knowledge and in some cases certification. And not expect full time employment right off the bat if ever and flexible schedule. You must be willing to travel a good part of the day if doing home care and be prepared to have more than one part time job if you want to make a living at it. Va and private pay are the best paying. I've held as many as 7 part time jobs at once doing caregiving. But with experience comes opportunity. Also you must have excellent organizational skills to keep everything straight and you must be able to clearly convey your activities and observations to your supervisors or nurses in charge. Also free caregiver certifications and home health aid certifications which are nice to have but each employer will usually require you to complete their organization's training regimen if they require one at all.

You must be accepting and non judgmental. Everyone is different and their needs vary. You need basic medical skills such as taking and understanding vitals . Vitals are temperature, blood pressure, respirations and oxygen saturation levels. Perform blood sugar tests. Understand what normal and abnormal vitals are. Be able to review and understand medication regimen with your patient. Know their code status. Have numbers readily available for doctors, the pharmacy, family or friends to contact in case of emergency. You must be CPR certified. Be able to perform skin assessments. And know who to report to if you see skin breakdown. Hand washing and cleanliness are imperative. Listening to your patient is vital. Protecting your patient’s privacy should always be considered. Some people are very shy or uncomfortable being exposed. . Take accurate notes as these may need to be reported. Be kind and gentle. People needing a caregiver are losing a certain amount of independence. Use proper body techniques for yourself when moving and lifting. Your back can be the first to go. Never “assume” anything. If you don’t know or understand something…ask the appropriate person. Remember safety first .

You need to be a caring and loving person.......You need to be be patient and kind hearted......Then you need a food handler cwertificate.....A red cross cpr certificate.......and possibly a caregiver certificate......open minded and willing to learn new skills to help seniors who at times may be a little difficult to handle
