I think the two should essentially go hand and hand. It is important to be both respected and liked to create a good relationship.

Being liked and respected is important, being liked but not respected is not a good position to be in. Being respected but not liked is better than either of the other options UNLESS the dislike is very strong. You have to balance the two, with respect being the more important aspect. If you're liked because you're a clown, but manage to get your work done is wel and fine, but if you're not so much of a own and always do your job better, quicker and more reliably, you will gain respect without losing respect. The "class clown" doesn't usually get much respect unless he has other redeeming qualities that set him apart from the rest. Bottom line in my opinion is that it's better to be respected AND liked, with the emphasis on respect.

I Think Respect should come from each employee, everyone should conduct themselves as professional in a professional atmosphere. On a vice versa in the Liked department not everyone like everyone they work with yet presenting themselves to be corjel with each other is for the company sake of professionalism an not for any employees personal problem amongst themselves. Yet on another Note you find some people wrapped up in their jobs claiming a Big head title instead of playing the part of the titlement of its company to maintain a Good establishment for employees. Good Luck on the job an find comfort in a job you like to have Respect you deserve as an Employee.

During my career I have found that most, not all, people who are respected are generally well liked. Oftentimes they model behavior that co-workers and subordinates admire or appreciate thus creating respect for them in the work place.

Better to be feared. Whenever I start a new job, I always find the biggest person in the office and punch them out. Then the others tend to leave you alone. (I hear it works for jail too.) ;-)

I'd go for respect, it's nice if people like you but respect is something you earn. I've never been one to need a lot of friends where I work.

When managing a large group of people as has been my experience, it is essential to be respected by everyone even though there will be some who will dislike or feel jealous of you. You in turn should show respect to your supervisor even if you do not like him or her as it is rare to find someone who liked every boss that they had throughout their worklife.
