Hi Cynthia, I can totally understand your frustration. I think when applying for jobs at restaurants and retail, you should definitely downplay your nonrelated (or "too qualified") type of experience. If you go into Applebee's with your CNA on your resume and tell them you're waiting on licensing, they will get a sense that you're not going to work there for very long and that you won't care about the job.

You definitely don't want to be dishonest if they ask you about it, but if you downplay that you're looking for a different career, they might be more willing to give you a chance. If you want to find a job for in-the-meantime, you will have to give them the impression that Applebee's is your goal. Even though it's understandable when a person leaves a job for a better job, it is never helpful to show that to the hiring manager when you're applying.

Don't give up yet! Try creating two resumes-- one for your career (CNA and related experience) and the other for your "job for now" (customer service, restaurant experience) and make sure you apply with the appropriate resume.
