personal reasons for wanting a raise

Is it okay to ask for a raise because of personal reasons (aka my rent went way up without me knowing)? I work at a nursing home and I don't think I'm going to be making enough to make ends meet but a lot of these older people rely on me for support so i'd feel bad for abandoning them....

Would you be able to switch to part-time status and maybe pick up a higher paying second part-time job? That way you can keep working with your favorite old folks and also get the money you need.

In this economy I wouldn't do anything to jeopardize my standing with my job. If you were that valuable then I believe that they would offer you a higher position. Pay should be negotiated in the hiring process. One thing that you can do is look for part-time work in addition to your full-time work. That's what I am attempting to do.

certainly ask, but don't tell them you are asking for a raise "bc you need it". Pick out some reason why you deserve this raise- what value have you added to the company, how has your work productivity grown? Give a convincing argument!
