Human Services Aide at City Of Norfolk

Slowly losing my ambition...... Bad luck!

I'm 25 years old and have held management positions, customer service positions, and post office positions. I have been working since I was 16. I'm sure that is not long to some of you, but I was a very ambitious person. I have held 2 jobs at one time. Now, I am married. No I am not blaming it all on being married to a man in the military but it seems like I am having the hardest time finding a job at his new station. I am usually pretty optimistic. I have a 6 year old son and a 3 month old son. Every time I have an interview and they see I'm associated with the military, they already have the mindset that I will be leaving them soon. They also see that I have had to change jobs because of my status. I have a Bachelors Degree in Human Services. I have worked in social services in my previous state. Now I have applied here in Kansas and I'm not sure what I did wrong. I gave them my winning personality, my experience, my skill set, and more. I am trying to work at a 8-5 job so that I can be there for the kids. Daycare on base shuts down at 6. My 3 month old is on a waiting list which is why I wouldn't even be able to start right away. Day care off base runs anywhere from 200-350 a week out here and this makes me feel worse about working. If I am making the bare minimum, then we would only be able to pay daycare with my additional income. I never had such limited availability which is making me less attractive in the eyes of the employer. What can I do to make myself more appealing? I even have been looking for work at home opportunities and I have found a few but being on a Kansas base means very very very slow speed internet. Most companies want a high speed internet. So that stops that plan right in its tracks. I'm just at a loss. I'm not the average military wife that can sit around and wait for her husband to get paid. We are partners. I truly hate that I can't help at all. He doesn't make but so much. Does anyone have any suggestions on something I can do? Suggestions on how to speed up internet when your limited on bases? Suggestions on how to make me more appealing to employers? Suggestions on work at home opportunities? Suggestions on daycare if you know how it works for infants on base?

You will be fine Shannon! You have an energy and that is all you need to succeed. So it's only a question of time when it will happen.

When you are on a career transfer, focus on your skills like energy, communication skills, computer skills (?), time management (!)... more info: https://www.wozber.com/us/guidebook/tag/top-soft-skills/

Search for job smart and focus on your skills. If you have a resume, do one thing - reshape your experience section. Change your duties ("I was responsible for...") into results ("Made customers happy.."). 95% of people write about duties and this leads to no calls. 5% of people write about results (using numbers, and action words as a proof) and get calls.

Best wishes Shannon.

Dialog direct is suppose to be a work at home job. If there r any group homes near u maybe u can apply and request the night shift. That kinda alleviates daycare altogether.

Mrs. Pierre, first your position is very easy to understand. I'm a former military officer so I don't have to guess about this. I'll deliver facts .... Most good jobs will not hire you because you are married to a military person. They know that you must pack up and travel every 6 to 36 months. Now I like you hold a Social Work degree...(BSW in CPS and APS)..... Now I had one advantage while I served... My former wife was my boss in uniform. She was always one rank over me cause she had 2 yrs more time in grade and service. When she went to Germany, I had to transfer. Same in Italy and Korea. Now companies know this so thus your issue. I saw good family service workers in Ft. Sill, Ft. Wainwright, and Ft. Lewis not work who had MSW and one DSW because they were married to military husbands. Not sure how to fix this but remember this..... If you don't practice for 5 yrs. your status as a worker is voided. And I was told in Virginia and Alabama by two of my former class mates in NSU that they never hire military service dependant people because they have to leave. Sorry, but that may be what's holding you up. Maybe CVS or a local food store will take you.

I love your drive and determination! There really isn't anything you can do to speed up your internet enough to do a lot of the work at home jobs that I know of. There must be a work at home job you can take with you next PCS. Some people sell on eBay. It doesn't have to be selling anything you've made but, say for example you buy vintage purses and shoes at second hand stores, or vintage glassware. Those are just examples of course but there are people that do quite well with eBay. You can also try guru.com or moonlighting.com. Keep brainstorming. With your ambition, you'll end up thinking of something great.

You're a tough cookie, Shannon! I can't imagine needing to find a new job that often. Have you tried Amazon at all? I do know they offer remote jobs, but I don't know how to help your internet speed. Here's the link for their jobs page: https://www.amazon.jobs
