Thoroughly Frustrated!

Is it legal for an employee to be forced to work an 18 hour shift? On Saturday, 4/14/18, I punched in @ 1:30pm & wasn't allowed to leave until 7:15am Sunday! To top it off, I was alone in the store by 10:30pm, the store was robbed around 1am & NO leadership showed up to assess the losses, despite company policy. I protested, but still returned to work Monday, 4/17/18, only to find out that my superiors lied to me & flat out ignored protocol so they could hang out with friends & family. They showed no regard for my safety, nor any respect for me as a person! I refused to return & was terminated 4/21/18. There HAS to be a law that prevents this type of abuse! Now, almost 2 months later, I have yet to find a new job. I know standing up for myself was the right thing to do, but I need to take care of my family! I'm tempted to go beg for my job back, but I also know that kind of mistreatment will probably continue. Either way, the struggle is REAL......

Educate yourself one the federal and State laws in your state. Your looking under labor and wage. Then you want Management laws. Once you do that then you find your EEOC office and file a complaint and lawsuit. Do not go back to that job. In addition have a copy of your police report. Until then find a way to start your own business. You can do it and Good luck.

The Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) does not limit the number of hours per day or per week that employees aged 16 years and older can be required to work.

I am confused by the verbiage "forced to work". Were you scheduled for a double that day or were you asked to work a double? Or did no one come in to replace you and management wasn't around to assist with finding a replacement?

Were you a supervisor or a team lead?

You refused to return to work, you weren't fired or let go. Terminating your position in such a fashion may make you ineligible for rehire.

I do hope you find something better for you. Best of luck in your search!

Smh... It's legal to work up to 20 hours within an 24 hour period voluntarily but forced is a totally different situation! That being said to be left alone, and then succumb to robbery, yikes! I feel for you, I would of not returned to work period, your livelihood was compromised. Ain't too proud to beg, but in this situation the employer should be begging you to come back to work! Prayers, goodluck to you with your future endeavors!

If I were to work a 18 hour shift,,I would take 2 to 3 days off from the job for the least.that is too much to work that many on a shift.I need my rest.Up to 8 to 10 should be good enough but some work more to make ends meet.

I think you should have went to corporate on that matter. Yes the hours are legal, bur 24 isn't. I worked for a job that worked up to 22hrs a day... Smh... But on the part about your sup. wanting to hangout with friends is wrong. You should have went to somebody above him. That's just crazy..

To answer your first question, I don’t think it’s legal to force you to work 18 hours straight. Unless there was some agreement when you started there that said overtime was expected and mandatory. But you may have given up your rights because you didn’t show up for 3 days. This is considered abandoning your job

But it’s horrendous that they didn’t show up to their own business after a robbery. If they do this AND leave you there for 18 hours at a time, you need to get a job ANYWHERE but there. They would only mistreat you more if you went back. Keep applying - you will find a better job.
