Accounts Payable Clerk at Sunland Optical Co

Wow, never should have quit working!

I have submitted several resumes with applications for data entry work and all I have been asked is why I haven't worked in the last 6 months. What does that have to do with qualifications? I am retired and just started to enjoy being home; but, I have medical bills to pay(interest is eating payments up). Well, what do qualifications have to do age, anyway?

It's blatant ageism, employers now look you up on Facebook and other social media to find out how old you are...what a disgusting country this is becoming...

I am so sorry to hear this, and the fact you can no longer retire is even worse. Why is it that in a country where people are screaming for a living wage that the ones who have worked all of their lives cannot retire with any security or dignity? I myself am actively planning my retirement but with things being as they are I really doubt I will be able to retire. I have many friends who have retired and most of them have had to go back to work, mostly because one or both of them got sick and the Doctors and Hospitals took everything they had. Now they are left with nothing but more bills and when they get back on their feet they got back to work. This is a travesty in this country that this happens. We should give back to those who gave the most. I feel that if you worked your whole life and paid into the system then you should get enough to get by. You should have insurance that covers your illness without leaving you destitute also. The Hospitals get millions in tax dollars to cover illegal immigrants but they refuse to give care to the elderly for free. We treat our older citizens like garbage, we use them up and toss them to the side when they are no longer able. I for one am tired of seeing those who give nothing but take everything getting by, and those who gave everything get nothing. I wish people would actually ask some of our older citizens how they are doing. I would be willing to bet that every one of you knows someone who has had to make a decision on whether to eat or get their medicine. How about having heat in their home in the winter or food on the table? We have had a hot summer here in Va. and I know people who had no AC because they could not afford the electric bills. Thanks for bringing this to our attention Carolina.

Work through a temporary agency first to update your resume. It's easier to find a job, when you have a job, they say.

Keep the faith that is yet to come stop stressing yourself about about something you have no control over look to the Hills where all your help come from and that's God almighty he is your provider he is your healer he is your strength he is your way maker he is all that you will ever need in life so keep on leaning and depending on him he may not come when you want him he's always on time love you and you are in my thoughts and prayers good luck and again keep the faith and remember but one door closes many more opportunities opens and turn the key some employer will hire you when you are least expected thanks Jean Jones Sharpe from Dinwiddie, Virginia

Read the book Getting a job after 50+ for dummies by Kelly Hannon. It lists a lot of age-friendly companies. Look at AARP/Life Reimagimed.com. Take some data entry courses at a junior college to make sure you are up on technology if at all possible. Sometimes you may not have to pay tuition. Finally try to see what a temporary agency has to offer. You could try Kelly Services or Apple One. Good luck.

Any lapse of employment needs to be explained. Be honest, tell them that you thought you were ready for retirement, you tried it for six months and decided that it was not for you. Many companies are looking for older workers to help balance their work force.
