How would you interpret new bosses behavior

Hello, I was offered a per diem position with the contingency that I pass background. I’m still going through the process of my references being checked, however there was another position that opened up in that same department for a part time benefited position prior to be given the final word that I was going to be offered the per diem, when I was offered the per diem, I mentioned I had applied for that position but was told it was offered to someone else, I had assumed it was to the person who I would be replacing who was in the per diem role already, however I believe that wasn’t the case. I received an email from my prospective boss congratulating someone else to coming aboard and that they will probably want to give there 2 weeks notice, mind you while being interviewed I was told there were no open benefited positions available, but yet while she was out of town, that part time opened up, which I applied for but was passed up for. To me it looks like I was lied to. I would appreciate others opinion on how they would see this.

First of all I'm sorry that happened to you. I think you set yourself up for that outcome. I would have graciously accept the per diem job as offered. Once you got your foot in the door, you could have been looking for another opening after you were hired. You were barely in the door inquiring about another position. It might have made the supervisor think you felt you were entitled to another position because you were applying for the per diem. I would have tried to possibly get another part time job if you could to supplement until something came up later. At least you were already at that current job and they knew your work experience.

Well, I can't tell exactly what's going on here. I'd ask if there is a path from per diem to full employment. This should have come up in an interview. The other person might have already passed their background check...so, they were essentially ahead of you in the process. Most top companies won't let you start before passing a background check...you'll have access to information at risk.

It sounds like a company in which the right does not know what the left is doing. Very shaky to be depended on for a regular income. If I were you I take whatever position they offer, and continue looking at other places for employment.

It is perplexing indeed! Do you mean that you'll be getting a salary plus a per diem? The difference is that a per diem can't be taxed.

This may be a situation of the right hand not knowing what the left hand is doing? The only plausible explanation that I could come up with is that their management may have had another candidate in mind when they offered it to you.

Did you get this offer in writing? if you didn't then you might be hosed! Do you have an email or phone number for a point of contact with this company?

There's an old 12 Step saying "when in doubt, check it out!"

Communication is a fragile thing with many cracks that lead to huge misunderstandings. Rather than trying to interpret what they meant to do, simply ask, or just let it go. You're the one who deserves a job, a GOOD job and as many opportunities as it can give you.
