Why is being overqualified a such bad thing?

My applications are immediately rejected if a hiring manager considers me as being over-qualified for a position. I guess employers automatically assume that I’ll get bored of the job eventually and quit but that’s not necessarily the case in my situation. I think employers should be more engaging with over-qualified candidates and take time to discuss what we can offer the position and how we’re willing to take a step backwards in order to move forward within their organization.

I just may be the droid you are looking for.

While I agree with Evon's comment, if that issue comes up in discussions with the potential employer, you should state how your relevant skill set makes you a strong candidate for the position. For the skills that you have that fall outside of the position's requirement, say that you not only bring the qualifications needed, but also more---and that's what you call "added value."

Dennis, you should always submit a Resume' that fits that particular job description and the requirements. Highlight your assets and try not to have the Resume go over 2 pages, 3 at the most. There is reasoning to show that when a person is overqualified they will leave as the economy is on the up tick or a better opportunity comes along. You can always speak to that in your cover letter and show that you are looking to be with a company and have an opportunity to be part of a team. Best of luck in your search.

Feel your pain. Been looking for work for two years now I'm about ready to explode the next time I hear "I'm over qualified ". There are some good comments but it comes down to money. The hiring person doesn't want to pay and is afraid to tell you what they will pay as they don't want to insult you with a much lower salary. I had an interview where the first words out of the interviewers mouth were this job only pays $20k per year so unless you are still interested this interview is over. 20k is less than a third of what I was making. Tried all the negotiating tricks I have been coached to say and they wouldn't budge from 29k. Interview over.

Because its another way to say they would rather not hire you . it can be something rubs them the wring way with you, it could be an age factor or something to do with social media they check into everything before you Go in and sit with them. Try to limit what you tweet or post any place

Overqualified is a way of discriminating or weeding people out which is stupid! Simply put if any of us had a child or loved one that needed medical attention, would you want to know that the person that you were sent to see as a professional in their field was incompetent and less educated and prescribed something to your child or loved one which caused them to become worse off? And most likely the answer is "NO"

Dennis you are better off moving on and letting someone else "DISCOVER" your knowledge, skills and abilities and most of all your diverse background which makes you more "CREATIVE"

It is not your loss!

Dennis, Many employers want someone that they can teach their methods to. Being good at what you do is a good thing, but most employers believe that there is no room to teach you their techniques or their way. To overcome this situation, there is a way you can word it on your resume. Downplay a little bit by humbling yourself..Let them know that you are teachable and that you are applying to their company to improve on what you already know for you respect their methods and are wanting to learn more.Always keep in the back of your mind, there is always someone who is smarter, faster, better looking, etc..etc..etc than you are and willing to improve oneself is always a plus when starting a new company

LAST YEAR HAD THE SAME THING HAPPEN AND FOUND OUT THEY HAD HIRED A HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT FOR THE POSITION AND AFTER TWO WEEKS HE QUIT DUE TO GIRLFRIEND PROBLEMS. GOT NO MORE REPLYS ON THE TECHNICAL JOB OF WELL MONITORING AT MAJOR FACTORIES IN THE DECATUR ALABAMA AREA. GOLDER AND ASSOCIATES TO BE EXACT. WOULD HAVE BEEN THE PERFECT JOB FOR ME BECAUSE OF MY EXPEREIENCE IN DECATUR AND FAMILIARITY OF FACTORIES AND SAFETY CONCERNS AND PRACTICES AT THESE FACILITIES.

Work!

I dont really think it is because they feel threatened. I would think if anything they would want to bring on someone well qualified to increase business. To me I feel it is because they can't pay what you are worth and fear you will jump at the offer for more money elsewhere. Companies spend a lot in training just to have employees leave for the next best thing. Although I think it's unfair and can be frustrating, I can understand why it is done. Another approach you can use is not embellishing too much on your resume if you feel this is the true cause of not being offered a position. Good luck and happy new year!
