"Start your own business"
Why does this seem to be people's answer when someone posts that they are in desperate need of a job, bills past due, eviction, children to feed and clothe. Starting your own business is NOT something to do when you are in financial straits; it is very expensive to get licenses, inspections, and up front product. A lot of new businesses fail in the first 5 years, aside from having someone you can trust to keep books & pay taxes. The days when you could make home made food & sell it from a cart are gone, even to have a food truck takes cash up front. Starting a business or becoming self employed is not something to do when you are in a bad financial situation but something to do when you have saved a couple $1000 +.
Hello Cheryl Sherpinski , Good point! Launching on a self employment journey in financial constraints is a challenge when someone is trying to manage financial survival during an extended period of unemployment. The advantage we have today is that there a variety of gig start up opportunities we can get involved in with little to no up front investment. These are a new alternative job seekers can turn to while they continue to search for their career job.
