Formal Job Offer is taking too long.
I verbally was offered a job last Tuesday. Thursday, they asked for references which I provided immediately after the request. Yet still they have not called them? It is a small private business with about 6 employees. What could be taking so long? Should I reach out? I am impatient, I know. :(

Hi,
Nowadays, snce 911 I believe, the distance from the offer to the actual start date can be up to 2 weeks. I'm like you, after a week I get worried. I always reach back after the first week on the 'is there anything else you require' type of vibe. That allows you to reiterate your interest and excitement about the opportunity as well as get a status update for reassurance. Just wait until you have teh offer letter in hand and signed before you give notice on your current job.
Congrats!
Toni

Hi Jill, I get impatient too, I can't be sitting around waiting for one job. You can always give them a call to find out what is going on, this way u will know whether to just move on or what

I agree with Mariah but don't let that stop you for applying for other positions. I waited a whole month to get a job with Parks and Recreation but that didn't stop me from interviewing and I was made an offer the day Parks and Recreation said I start Monday but I told them I'm going with the other offer that paid twice as much. I called them in person and thanked them and they said I wasn't burning my bridges. Because of the scenario above companies are streamlining the hiring process because of situations exactly above, employers are losing candidates because they're interviewing process is old school. I also found out that a lot of employers are foregoing drug screening which to me opens up a can of worms.

Hello! I have to extend my sincerest apologies, my phone and computer broke and I only replaced them recently, I'm afraid I do not own a car and will not be able to pick up your child :(

Hi Jill: I'd definitely reach out! Since there are so few employees, it might come down to that they've been busy and haven't had time to go through your references. And congrats on the job offer - let us know when you start!
Maybe they are having difficulty reaching your references. It's only been two days. I would call to find out. In my opinion, verbal offers are useless. An offer letter with your signature is binding and legal. In the meantime, continue your job search instead of waiting for a job that may never materialize.
