You can probably get a job because you are bilingual but it may not be clerical unless bilingual is more important than correct English. For example: You should have said, I left PR... and I was a secretary ... and, I left my home ... Take an English class that will help you with grammatical skills. So sorry this has happened to you and so many from PR. God bless you and help you to do well. I am struggling also. I still need to work and I am 67. I can’t do stand up jobs so I am limited. So far, not many have contacted me. I have decided to study so I can sell insurance. It’s in Spanish also, or try to get a job with the State. Bilingual is very needed and you may have an advantage with your skills. Again, good luck!

Wow, being bilingual is a highly marketable skill. When you develop a resume high-lighting all your clerical abilities, make sure you emphasize your proficiency in both languages (English/Spanish?). Sounds as though you won't be unemployed long. Good luck!

You should be able to find lots of positions wanting bilingual people. I do administrative (clerical) work, and there are lots of times I see a job posting that looks really interesting, and then read the skills where it states bilingual preferred. This has happened more than once to me! Unemployment is going down, so that should help when you come here!

Put the past behind you. Search for jobs in the area in which you are now living. Go out and take a drive or a walk around town and make note of all of the "help wanted" signs that are posted. Walk in to those places and inquire about their positions. Then apply for them if you feel that you have the qualifications. It takes much longer to get hired if you just sit behind a computer and randomly submit a bunch of resumes to positions that you are probably not qualified for. Start networking! Get out and meet your neighbors. Ask them where they work. Ask if there is any job openings at the places where they work. Get to know the folks at church. Most of them have jobs. And guess what! The jobs that most of them work at are probably hiring, too. Its a lot easier to get a job if you can get a friend or neighbor to "recommend" you to their employers. Get out from behind the computer and go make some new friends. You will have a job in no time.

Annie:

Try some temporary agencies until you land a permanent position. So glad you were able to travel from Puerto Rico. Hope you and your family are blessed where ever you go. Sorry, you lost your lively hood. Much success in the NEW YEAR.
