This is bull****!

A friend and I were catching up at the office and I overheard talking a couple cubes down. I wasn’t even intentionally eavesdropping when I heard them saying something related to the yearly salary earnings of one of my coworkers. He’s at the same job level as me but according to what I heard he’s getting paid A LOT more than me! We’ve been working here about the same amount of time too! There’s all types of crazy thoughts running through my mind right now. Did he get a better offer because of his racial background or is it a simple case of him being a better job offer negotiator than I am. I hate playing the race/gender inequality card; REALLY HATE THAT!!! But my family can use that extra cash right now with school and holiday planning. All I want to do yell at my boss right now but I need the job. Any advice how I can address this professionally without putting my job at risk?

BUYER/ PROCUREMENT

At the outset, let me make it clear that I hate/don'the like any racial comments (I am Indian). Now, regarding disparity in pay , it is common in any private organisation. As somebody pointed out, this is done at the time of negotiation, I fully agree with him You also can do the same. Get / develop expertise in your own area of job, then apply to a different organisations and negotiate if selected. But risk is there if it comes to the knowledge of your present employer.

...sounds like de devil is playin' with yur head...Sure, who doesn't like money?? Money makes de world go 'round...but WHO actually MADE earth---and spins it in MID-AIR?? The answer you seek should first start with asking God what you should do...Thar could be all kinds of seemingly unrelated solutions to yur 'problem'. Case in point, a very dear friend of mine ( who I would die for ) spends much of his time & energy obsessing who makes how much money ; his bosses, his co-workers, rockstars on de radio. and racecar drivers on TV...Blah, blah, blah on & on & on...The truth is : God gives all of us what we HAVE. Complaining about this or that & whatnot JEOPARDIZES yur own blessings !! Sure, we could talk about envy, we could discuss feeling cheated, not being recognized for our worth, how hard we work---a gazillion topics...What it ALL boils down to is HOW SECURE DID YOU FEEL prior to finding out ( innocently ? ) about the pay discrepancy?? Were you happy & glad?? Was everything smelling like roses & life--actually--wasn't all that bad?? My good friend has nothing in life....a rusty, 22 year old pick-up...some mula in de bank--but not much...his health is failing...has few other friends. WHY?? I believe he's cursed himself---he wants SO badly to have what everyone else has---but didn't pay attention to HOW they got it.... My only advice to you is to be content---fer now---with yur LOT in life...know that God is where yur blessings come from---NOT YOUR EMPLOYER...de magic ' trick ' in life is to mind yur own business, and work hard as if someone is constantly over yur shoulder ( Jesus )...instead of letting de devil drive you absolutely bonkers---spit in his face---and command him to STOP pestering you with needless anquish by pouring our Holy Lamb's sacred blood over your soul...So you fight yur employer, win, get a raise....what if then yur house gets termites, every screw & nail attracts to yur car tires, your health starts to falter....A big paycheck is nice---but if yur ungrateful & do not acknowledge who & what gave you that money---it WILL be taken away from you & given to the humble, obedient servant that is happy & glad for anything that our Creator & Maker deemed necessary...This doesn't mean we shouldn't strive for a " GOOD " life---nothing wrong with ambition & goals & dreams--- if you want those things, work even harder to get them...irregardless of what so & so puts in their wallet...God has given all of us a wonderful prose in de Bible called the Book of Ecclesiastes---in this fantastic Scripture lies God's wisdom thru the smartest human ever made : King Solomon. Please pray, first, to receive discernment from de Holy Spirit...then just read the ENTIRE 12 chapters...it'sa fast read, not at all time consuming. You'll find a lovely PEACE will envelope you ( hopefully ) as the Truth will literally set you free---because the road yur heading is not a road at all...what yur doing is chasing after de wind...

I got started at 12 and am just now making 13 after 6 months yet one of my coworkers just started a month ago and he already makes 13. It irritates me, but whatever, I knew what I was getting paid and my raise scale before I started so I'm all

does he have the same job background as you and how hard/long does he work and a weekly bases. management always give raises to the extremely good worker. If he had a few jobs that he would will increase his value greatly because he has previous employers can say if he is a good worker or not.

My wife had a strong similar situation except the man worked FOR her AND had way less experience. She found out his salary due to him leaving a copy of it on the copy machine. She simply went to her boss, told him the moron left his salary out for anyone to see, she was offended as she was his boss, more experienced, more responsibility, more knowledgeable, and had even trained this guy while continuing to correct his mistakes. While not getting what she deserved (honestly, a man would have thrown a fit but women tend to be nicer) she did get an immediate 10% raise. This year, 18 months later, she was given a new title and a 11% raise while the moron stays where he is. Explain how you know, be prepared to explain why you are as good/better, (no race/gender), and go fight for yourself!! If you don't, who will? Good luck!!

Proffessionally speaking, to even relay the message of a co-worker being jealous, should just let that conversation die down or should be relayed to head adminstrators. If the other party is complaining of salary maybe he or they, should put out more work effort if someone elses salary concerns that party so much. Bosses like seeing your head on your own paper. Also, keeps the third parties nose clean.

Sir, there seem to be unknowns at this time. I recently found out that I get paid way less than some of my counterparts. However, what I consider is this....good for them for being able to negotiate a higher salary...and more importantly, I really don't have insight to the credentials and experience that they brought to the table unless I was able to get a copy of their resume. I have to assume that they are way more experienced and/or I undervalued my own experience since I was happy with what I negotiated as pay at the time.

Thomas , You could simply ask for a raise ? What's the worst your boss can say other than no.. Big example of why employees shouldn't discuss wages

Race is not a "card" it's a reality. The co-worker could be lying. Don't let greed be the reason. If you feel you deserve a raise go in prepared and plead your case if the answer is no decide to peacefully stay or go. If you have ligitamate concerns of discrimination address them with HR with proof. Good Luck!
