Hard and Dependable Worker

What the hell's happening with retail?

I feel like I have whiplash. Macy's is closing hundreds of stores, but Amazon's hiring 100,000 people for their new retail stores? I'm a retail cashier, and all this is making me super nervous. Anyone else wondering what's going on out there? Is retail not a stable industry to work in anymore?

Retail is definitely changing. It will be increasingly difficult for traditional brick and mortar stores to compete with online retail and the unique customer experiences it provides. Additionally, automation and robotics will no doubt take on some of the tasks previously completed by employees. The truth is there are very few truly stable industries out there. Most professionals are being impacted and often significantly altered by technology, automation and changing customer behaviors. My suggestion when seeking employment is to find opportunities where you can 1) learn as much in the areas in technology and digital practices as you can and 2) focus on those types of roles which are not easily or economically replaced by automation or robotics.

I would say 'brick and mortar' stores are going away. It's just far too easy now with the net to shop in the comfort of your home as opposed to actually traveling to a store and not knowing if they have what the customer wants or not. Physical businesses and compete with virtual companies
