The Grass Isn't Always Greener on the Other Side... ?
I recently left my job at a small college that I was at for 8 1/2 years for a major university. I've only been here a little over a month, since October 14. Recently I've been feeling " homesick" I guess you can say for my old job. I think I feel this way for several reasons: 12 hour days now and having to travel, compared to 8 hours and being close to home. I have kids (12 & 4) . Has anyone ever felt like this? I've had a few friends that left our old job and said the grass isn't always greener on the other side and I feel like I'm starting to feel that way. The job is also completely different. :-/

Never quit a job until you have the other (next?) one completely 100% lined up & ready to start into, ASAP!!

To stay or leave? Always a tough decision; The cost-benefit analysis can be difficult; Personally, I prefer the "quality of life" over money IF money is not that big of an issue (but of course, it might be).
The nature of the work not being what you expected is a problem too; Sometimes the job winds up not being what was advertised (and now what are you going to do? - they have you over a barrel as they say).
Maybe it would be worth looking for a different job at this point; It never hurts to look. Get some new experience where you are now and move on.
Best of Luck.

I have found that making decisions can b one of the hardest things to do....Ur pulled in all directions...Going back and forth....Should I or shouldn't I ?? Ultimately u make a choice and sometimes it works out and sometimes it doesn't.....I left a job once and came back 2 weeks later...Perfect example... never burn ur bridges...

Like Sharon suggested, moving closer to your job would be helpful, if you can do this. However, I think that in time, you'll learn to love your new job. I have always felt "homesick" for previous jobs when I start a new one, but it inevitably changes over time.

Samantha, can you move closer to you job? Did you know, before taking the job that it is 12 hours and not 8? These are things you have to take into consideration. Why did you seek new employment elsewhere? I thought about coming out of retirement and going back to my job. I thought relocating to NC, I will have no problems finding employment. But, I found out yesterday, a supervisor and an administrator were fired. So, I told myself, no I am not going back to that drama.

I actually was fired from a job that i had and i was burned out. That job at that time was a good job. That industry was on the decline due to the cell phone technology. My new job was with the health industry. Good move.

I felt that way years ago and returned to my previous job. When returned to my previous job the grass got browner not even green what it once was when I left. So I had to make my move once again. So as Suzette stated make Lemonade until you find a another job.

A good friend once to me a saying. I'm sure everybody's heard it but I'll say it again. "When life gives you lemons, ..... For those of you who have been living under a rock and have not heard it, make lemonade" for the youngsters: Google it. I've been there and I hope my attempt to cheer you up, wasn't a failed one

Been there done that
Samantha, the thing about grass on the other side is its still grass. It takes time to nurture the grass on either side of the fence. The key is that you pick a side to stay on. Nurture it if you understand what I'm saying. Sure you were at one job 8.5 yrs. and the new one is more time consuming. Put yourself in a possition for prosperity at the new one. Do what you have to untill you can do what you want. Dont compair now with the past. This may be a lil unorthodox but I was told once if you have one foot in the past and one foot in the future youre just peeing on the present. Keep your head up do the best you can with what you have and remember to improvise to stay alive and you will come out on top.
