Assistant Manager

I am being judged on my appearance before my qualifications are even considered. I've witnessed younger Ladies without the experience and less qualified, get hired based on their appearance. I understand appearance is very important in any aspect of life in general. I need advice on how to make a positive impression that is not based on what I look like. I am in need of a good stable career, but never even get called in for an interview and I am positive it's because of appearance. I dress well, I carry myself well and I feel like I'm a great person who, given the chance, has a lot to offer..However, at the current time, I do need dental work and I am working at having this work done. I'm being judged based on this one circumstance and finding it very difficult to even get interviewed. It's heartbreaking and really getting me down.

I know the feeling. Not getting judged on appearance but my background despite my qualifications and numerous degrees I have obtained since.

Sorry to hear that Bro. I guess once you take care of the dental work, things will get better for you.

If your worried about your appearance before the interview then be sue you shut down your social media pages everyone put everything on the web *spent know why * but anyway if you think that's why your not getting any calls back take everything down along with your age so then you can at least you will have a better chance of getting a chance for an interview . Than when you do get the interview be sure you dress to impress and when doing the interview just express your qualifications be sure you try not to be nervous **just pretend their in their in their birth day suit **lol just walk in their like you have the job and your talking to your friend that's how I did my interview because I was always so very nervous and it made it so much better and I got the job . Hope this helps and good luck with you job search

Please don't take this the wrong way....but maybe it is for the best! If you continue to get hired with the dental issues you have now you may wait years to have it fixed completely. And that would be an injustice to you. Nothing is better than being able to smile completely and be comfortable while doing so! And as long as you are uncomfortable with your smile it will effect you in a million negative ways even in your ability to do the best at work. Start fixing whatever you can as soon as you can. It is possible. Then nail your next interview and be able to enjoy smiling outside of work as well!

Diane, it's a shame that more often than not we are judged first by our appearance when applying for a position. I'm not certain what you do, but unless you are a runway model, this should not be an issue. One issue may be the hiring manager does not know how to address this issue, and simply finds it more convenient to hire someone else. I would simply address the 'elephant' in the room when you are first introduced to a potential employer. Let them know that you are aware of your current medical need, and have been working on getting this corrected, and ask if there is anything they would like to know about this situation. This should alleviate some of the awkwardness of the situation, and will allow a potential employer feel more comfortable about addressing this issue (if it is an issue).

I can relate to your dilemma. I have a tooth that is missing near the front of my mouth., and I DREAD the thought of going on interviews.

I am in my early 60's; highly educated; thin; attractive. But I know the dental thing has been getting in my way!!!!!

All we can do is pray, and keep moving. Hopefully, some one will have enough dense and compassion to look beyond appearance and give us a chance!
