Advice
I originally took a job in November as manager of a retail store. I couldn't believe I was offered the job since I have never had any retail experience with my background as an administration assistant and that is what I have done for the last 30 years not only do I love being an admin, but I am good at it. I had been training for a week when the owner called me and asked if I would run the storage units and the truck rental division instead since the person who occupied it was leaving. I knew I would be on the computers more so I agreed. My problem is not one day goes by where I am not verbally abused by my boss. Any chance he will get, he yells at me. The other day walking into the building, I slipped on the ice outside on the sidewalk, when I told him I fell, he yelled at me for not walking around the ice. I was just yelled out because I took truck to a group that cleans out our non-payment storage units. My employer had asked me if I had any trucks they could use and to grab the keys. I originally went to find the guy to give him the keys but since I walked right by the truck, I brought him the truck as well. My boss said he only wanted me to fetch the keys, not go get the truck and stood there for 5 minutes degrading me over getting the keys. I get in trouble for cleaning out the trucks too good, for sweeping out the storage rental units too good, not one time has he ever said anything positive. This is a business where four business are ran from and many times there are only two of us here to run all four and I am always one of the two and most days a lunch is out of the questions and breaks are unheard of. Please don't tell me to contact anyone because it's against the law, he has already been through that with other employees and it hasn't changed. Everyone tells me to just quit but I have a family to support but this is wearing me down mentally. I had a really good resume but when I had to post my current position, it made my resume look like trash because I can't put anything good down about what I do here. I would really love to go to work in the schools as an admin but just can't seem to get my foot in the door. Any suggestions????

Start yelling back. This guy needs someone to back him down. He will have no respect for you till you get tough. I had a DM like this once, one day she threw her keys across the room at me and I whipped them back at her hitting her. She then apologized said she just meant to toss them on the desk next to me and took me out to lunch. I worked with her, not for her for another 5 years. Sometimes we have to demand respect to get it.

Well, I would definitely suggest you continue to look for other employment as much as you can. Have you thought of going through any staffing agencies? They might be able to help you get your foot in where you're most interested. I'm pretty sure I've seen admin jobs at schools in my area before through a temp agency, so that might help you.
It's never okay for someone to abuse you. You're not someone's punching bag, pin cushion, or dartboard. You're going to have to grow a bit of a thick skin no matter where you work, but someone who constantly grinds you down like your current boss has serious issues. You won't be able to provide for your family if you can't provide for yourself, first.
