“I finally figured out how to build more skills and land a better job without going back to college.”

I bounced around minimum wage jobs for years trying find a place where I could work my way up the ladder with hard work, dedication, and company loyalty without success. I always thought excellence in my job performance would be enough inspire management keep me on a progressive career path that would ultimately lead to bigger jobs and better pay. I eventually took a hard look inward and realized career success is a personal responsibility. Learning a non-traditional approach to build more employable skills took some time until I finally figured out how to build more skills and land a higher paying job without going back to college. Below are 3 quick and easy steps that helped me break through the corporate “Glass Ceiling”:

Focus on what you want - seek out job descriptions for ideal jobs and highlight key skills and qualifications then build relationships that can expose you to those skills. On the job training opportunities are still out there as long as you know how to ask for them.

Use Online Training - websites like Udemy.com and EdX.org offer plenty of FREE and/or affordable technical skills training.

Build Meaningful Relationships - go out of your way to meet department managers and corporate decision makers then use your social and interpersonal skills to cultivate meaningful relationships. “Who You know” is ultimately “How You’ll Get There!”"

The traditional college to career path is still the best way to go if you can afford it. The learning opportunities and relationships built during the college experience can be life changing. A college degree opens more doors and opportunities to secure a meaningful career. Although there’s a growing controversy over a the guarantee that a degree can secure a good job and salary.

Company career track outlines are a thing of the past. I remember those used to be top recruiting incentives for big companies like IBM and General Electric. Employees today need to have a personal career plan and a keen vision to stay ahead of new technical trends in order to remain competitive in the workplace community.
