It’s all over...
Turned 55 years old today but not sure I’ll be around to see 56. Lost my job in 2014 to the far East workforce when the suits at the company I faithfully worked at for 25 years decided they can manufacture more parts at less cost over there. Divorced in 2015 and all my kids are grown and gone. Temps jobs I’m able to find don’t last more than a few days at a time. My life savings are almost all gone and I can’t find anyone willing to give me a chance to prove I can still work. So, where do I go from here? How will I survive when my savings finally runs out? Like I said… not too sure about 56.

Check out some of the truck driving schools. They will train you for free and put you to work after, decent money too.

I recently turned 57 and have not had a permanent job for over a year. I do have a good temp job right now and I hope and pray that this will roll over into a permanent position at the company. Anyway, if I don't find a decent permanent job by spring, I will go to school and study to earn a commercial driver's license in order to drive a truck. There is a severe shortage of truck drivers out there, it's not that physically difficult if you don't have to load and unload, and they are desperate for women drivers. Some trucking companies will even pay to send you to their school and you are guaranteed a job upon graduation, though I have the money to pay for school.

Hello Ron, I am in the same boat you're in, job wise at least, and this is round #2 for me. It's even a bit harder at this time for me because I don't have young ones here to stop me this time from taking the ride off the cliff with my motorcycle. I am asking myself the same questions you are and having the depression and doubts in yourself as you are too. It looks like you've been out longer than I have been and what you worked so hard for is almost depleted it seems. Have you taken a self survey to peg your interests at this stage of life? It'll give you some guidance and help you determine a direction. It may not be a lucrative as your former job, but you may be a lot happier and I'm sure you'll have to do some adjustments and eat crow for a while. I know I'm going to and I hope to make it thru this time. It's VERY hard at best, but I have grandchildren I'd like to see grow up. Do you? God, I so wish I could talk with you in person. I'd cry with you too over all the blood sweat and tears we've put up with thru our years in our careers. I'm a designer - mechanical and electrical - and it seems you may be in similar work. I was told by a few people I should take a civil service test too. I just may. It's a requirement to be a park ranger. I love the outdoors and that's something I'd like to do I think. Take stock in what you like and give it a shot to find something you really want to do and "reinvent" yourself. You have a chance to do something you love to do for a change. Hey, I'm 58 and a good designer and many I worked with were angry with the company when they let me go. A couple quit because of them letting me go too because they were tired of the company being stupid. It's how I know I am good at what I did. Just time for something else. I wish you the best of luck for lack of not being able to chat face to face or maybe we could come up with something together. There's way too much good talent out there at our ages to throw in the towel and I wish I knew how to harness all of us together and come up with a product to market or service to sell and make a living at it. I'm sure you don't care to hear this, but Happy Birthday anyway. It's a problem we all have once a year...smiles...

I know it seems bad but if you are under 60 you will get a job quicker than us looking for a job that are 60 & older . You may not get what you want but you will get a job & it will take a while so don't give up. Look at agency work try more than one.
Hello Ron, You will live to see 56. Speak positive things and positive things will happen. Speak to receive a good job, that will happen too.
