Dazed and Amused, not to mention confused!!

The meandering path of navigating this job market continues. Two weeks ago, I receive a phone call from a recruiter saying a job which matches my qualifications and experience has come up. They describe the job to me and say there is a determined $$ per hour rate. I say I am ok with the compensation being offered and to go ahead and submit my resume. Jump to three days or so later, I get called by the recruiter and am told I have an interview with the company... YIPPEE!! I went in, did the interview. It was very conversational, pleasant, the manager I would be working for was very personable, we shared information on various forms of communication etc., I answered the 20 questions, asked her some questions etc. I left there with a good feeling about the job, and upon my return home, wrote a thank-you note and sent to the recruiter to forward to the interviewing manager. Two weeks pass and I hear nothing. I reach out to the recruiter only to be told the company went with a candidate with a lower rate! How the h*** is that possible? Salary never came up as a part of the interview, other than the interviewer asking me if I was ok with what they were offering. Was I supposed to say, "oh no that is way too much and I would be quite happy to do it for half that amount!"? UGH. Needless to say, the frustration continues. Sorry for the long rant.

The lower rate may have been offered by a different recruiter/candidate. Recruiters will negotiate their rates directly with the company. That rate is not the same as the amount you get paid. The recruiter set the amount he or she told you. The difference is how much they get. The manager will not discuss amounts with you, but with the recruiter's company. A different recruiting company may set different rates for their candidates with a different amount that they keep. Also, keep in mind that the reason you're told you didn't get the job is not always the real reason.

Yeah, that is really frustrating. I can't believe they wouldn't even negotiate with you at all about it if they were interested.
