Is there such thing as over qualified?

Ive been here in the states for 4 months, I can work legally. Before moving I am a registered nurse in the Philippines. Upon arriving here I am reviewing for my NCLEX to be a registered nurse here as well in the US. While studying I am looking for a part time job, I have been applying everywhere name a restaurant or a coffee shop even in book stores. But they keep telling me I am over qualified for the position they’re offering.

I have a work from home position open. Looking for someone to answer phone calls and get information from callers who are interested in our note buying service. Are you still looking for work?

Jen, Employers will tell you this because they do not feel you will settle for the pay that they are offering. They are reluctant to hire someone because also feel that you will not stay there long. TYJ

Maybe this is God trying to get your attention. He has come thru for me when I broke my femur 2 years ago. The Surgeon cut a nerve in my leg and I was left with a paralyzed right foot (drop foot) I kept my faith in him and after 4 surgeries and more pain than I could ever imagine ( a rod pounded thru my femur from knee to hip) I've regained most of the control of my foot (even though a Neurologist said I never would) prayer works. He gets our attention any way he sees will work for each of us. Please try true prayer.

I feel your pain, Jen and I am actually walking in your shoes. I am an adjunct instructor in northeast Ohio. Summer is always a challenge for me financially, because my income drops drastically. This year was made even worse when my husband was let go from his job. I have been applying at all sorts of minimum wage jobs, from cashiering at Dollar General to a ten hour a week receptionist position at an assisted care facility. No results. I know it doesn't take a Masters to answer phones, but at least I will show up for work. The good news for you is that as soon as your license is approved, you will be hired! Hang in there.

"Overqualified" usually comes down to a few issues. The first is that the employer is concerned that once a better job comes along you will leave. The second issue is that you may become bored with the job. Another issue is that you may feel that you know more about the job than your boss.

Overqualified is meaningless. I am convinced that potential employers say that because it is convenient or else because they have someone else in mind. I have worked in jobs below my level of ability in order to stay employed and pay bills.

Companies hire people they feel will be a good fit for the job they are offering. This includes considering how long that person will remain with them. They invest time and money when hiring and are looking for someone who will stay with them for a long period of time.
