Tammy Boulter, CHES (Certified Health Education Specialist)
I am becoming frustrated with my job search! I am 48 yrs old and recently graduated magna cum laude with a BS in Public Health Education. I returned to college after a very unexpected divorce to make myself more marketable. I have been applying for and interviewing for some great positions over the past 3 months (health education advocacy/outreach etc) and each interview has ended very well with me being told that I would be a great fit for the position and company -- but I have yet to receive an offer. All interviews have gone until the 2nd/3rd interviews but in the end, I have been passed over for either someone with more experience or an intern currently at the company (I have been told that I was 2nd choice each time). I've lost out on 4 positions this way.
Can anyone offer me some advice or answer some looming questions?
Is my age a factor?
Is the fact that I have a 20 yr employment gap due to staying at home with my kids a factor? Am I being impatient?
I know that I have the life skills, personality and education to make a difference and do a good job. I just haven't had the chance.
Any remarks would be much appreciated! Thank you!
Hi Tammy, First of all, congrats on getting your degree AND raising your family! It looks like you're sending out initial thank you notes if you're getting 2nd/3rd interviews. It has only been 3 months, girl! You are well on your way, I am so sure. I like your confidence. Is this a position that may be advertised under a lesser (sorry!) level such as "Assistant Certified Health Education Specialist?" I'm unfamiliar with that work. Please know that you're not alone. I won't even admit how long I've been searching, interviewing, cursing, crying, re-vamping...oh, and I'm 46. I've been told the same, hiring in-house, etc. Ah, but we have each other. Lean. Good luck to you, Tammy!
