Student Master Of Arts In History at American Public University

Seeking Advice

Hi Everyone, If you have a spare moment I am seeking advice on my resume' and employment prospects. May as well start with my biggest concern, my age! I am 67 yrs old. I am about to complete my graduate studies, I have a BA in Sociology and am completing my MA degree in History with a concentration in Public History ( with a 4.0!!) in a couple of months. I am quite concerned as I have not been employed for nearly 25 yrs., I stopped working as a Commercial Property Manager in Austin,Texas to care for my seriously ill parents, following their deaths I began university studies with the help of my husband's VA benefits. My strengths are in research, composition and working with people- my limitations are that due to my husband conditions, total disabled veteran, I need to work from home- I have completed all of my university studies online and been very successful. My questions to you:

  1. Will anyone be interested in hiring a person of my age?
  2. Do you think there are valid research positions available for remote workers?
  3. How should I address my quite obvious lapse in employment on my resume' ? I appreciate you rime in reading this and would be so grateful for any guidance- Debbie Cruz

First I would like to say congratulations on your degrees and keeping your head in the game to get what you want. Secondly, I would like to thank your husband for what he has done for this country and I pray for his strength and recovery. As far as with your employment, yes it is going to be a little hard for you considering your age, because as bad as it sound for some reason employers tend to stay away from older people because they feel as though most will not have the strength or patience to deal with and on top of that you have 25yrs gap in employment even though the gap is long, you weren’t just sitting on your behind not doing anything. So on your resume I would be completely HONEST and if you get a interview I would explain to them why you haven’t been working in 25yrs and somebody will most likely understand. Alot of employers would like for you to just be HONEST. There are PLENTY of home positions you can do, you just have to apply yourself. Good luck!
