Should I or shouldn't I list this job on my resume?
I was revenge fired from a church secretary position in January of this year (you'd have to see my other post regarding this to get the full story). I actually chose to resign rather than be terminated because I was caught completely off-guard by the news. I worked here for 8 months and learned a lot of new job experiences that would potentially be helpful in getting me a job in a bank. All of my previous jobs were in the medical field so my current resume isn't helping me get into the banking industry (I have not listed the church job on my resume). Should I add this job to my resume and job applications to show that I have some experience in bookkeeping/financial duties? And what should I say when asked if they can contact the employer (which would be the woman who revenge fired me)? Over 50 and really desperate for a job (yeah, old picture here. I don't look like that now).
Hey Melanie, I definitely think you should include it on your resume! You were there long enough that it's really good experience. If you are asked by potential employers if they can contact, I would just give them a brief explanation about how you left because you felt the church wasn't a great fit and you'd prefer they were not contacted. I think as long as you are courteous about it, you shouldn't have a problem!
Hi Melanie: Thanks for posting to Jobcase! I think it's great to put it on your resume, but I wouldn't use them as a reference, as you want to control what's being said about you to prospective employers. Hope this advice helps!
I think you should put this on your resume. It would help with in the area of experience. Since you resigned from this position, I would say I left to pursue a opportunity in a new field. I personally feel it will not leave you open to explain any negative issues at your previous employer. But, you can elaborate on the positive experience that you gained through that position.
