Discrimination
I recently took a job that is below my skill set just because I needed the money and knew they would hire me. Of course, with this job there is a training period (it's a call center) and the other day the instructor called myself and another "older" employee out in front of the class and asked us if we understood what she just said. Number one, I understood and know more than she explained and probably knows. I constantly help the other employee because after a week, she still can't login properly. This instructor gives all her attention to the other side of the room (the rowdy, 20 somethings who just wanna talk about how much they partied the night before or ask for aspirin for their hangover). This isn't the first incident and she has the other employees doing the same thing. I don't know whether to let it go until I find a better job or say something? Since when did being 55 make me an idiot? I'm not stupid, I'm bored.

sounds familiar and what is sad is that Hollywood has less age discrimination than Corp. America as I have discovered doing extra work

Patricia,
Based on what you have described, being "called out" is not discrimination, it sounds like disrespect. With that said, however, if she based on her comments on the fact that you are "older" implying that you cannot hear or understand based on your age, I would have a conversation with the HR department. I would explain the situation and let them know that you feel like you have been singled out because of your age. This most certainly will get the attention of the trainer and organization.
I hope this helps.

I'm 55. Let it go. Lol. I see/deal with stupid people all the time. You might learn something. Or at the verry least

You could let it go but I understood you this position because you needed the money. ..has that changed somehow because you are offended. ..does the original need disipates because your ego is bruised. ..your plan is not to be there indefinitely so I say unless it happens again..move on and continue making that money..

I empathize and I think you should document, document, document. The over 50 class, while supposedly protected, is very much discriminated against. Nearly impossible to prove, I hate to say. I think you should continue your job search while you are employed and find a place that values your experience and provides an environment where you can continue to contribute and succeed. Sadly, corporate America, for the most part is only looking at the bottom line for short term gains. It is a proven fact that the "seasoned professionals" are more loyal, dedicated and contribute well beyond their younger colleagues. Your next call should be to HR with your documentation. Best of luck. .

Ms. Holt I would first bring it to the instructors attention. If that didn't take care of the problem take it higher up. I would definitely aggressively hunt for other employment if none of the other actions cured your problem. Good luck.

I think you should slap the person and state you are not that class which he belongs. Because if you don't state your feeling this will happen again.

My suggestion to you is to document everything as to date and time and the other older employee should do the same. I would then start looking or keep looking for other employment because that supervisor knows you both are doing their job. so just to be protected document everything. the other positive thing you can do is ask fora sit down to find out how your doing the work assignments given. By asking for feedback you are being both proactive and can truly see where you stand. Document what they tell you and stay focused on the job and helping your coworkers. Find job satisfaction where you can until it either improves or you move on.

I truly understand I'm in the same position but I work in a chiropractor office. I'm 54. The younger worker get respect I don't. I get blamed for their mistakes. I was give 4 days to learn every machine and ect. Other others get told I'm not gonna hold you responsible. And it's been over a year since they been employed here. They get the raises. When I do 3 or more patients in a row they sit around nothing is said when they do have to do about that much it's said I'm not doing anything thing. They always complain they tired. Theses females are young and always calling me old and 1 of the Dr. As well call me old. Dr. Don't think that I can preform majority of the computer work but yet ask at young dumb one they ask me I tell them how to do the job and they take and get the credit. I truly understand Your position. Brawn and no brain as they treat me. I slow down on my work activities. Witch I know is wrong and beneath me but I'm so done.with this. In search of another job. They younger gOrla have been setting me up to get fired. I talk to the Dr. But they don't listen say it's tit for tat I'm doing. I'm in a now in cituation. They keep me around because of the patients live for my work. Which is the reason I stick around because of the patients. I don't have time nor like the childish mess that's goes on here so I try to stay far away. I stay to my self.
I know exactly how you must feel. Jobs are discriminating against older individuals and this country is doing absolutely nothing about it. I recommend that you continue looking for another job, but don't leave the one you have until you have the other one, because the chances of finding another job at our ages are slim to none. I am very sad that this country has come down to this. I have been looking for a job for over a year now. I have a very impressive resume; I am a graduate with a Bachelors of Science "cum laude" followed by many achievement awards yet they rather hire someone who is fresh out of college and the only thing in their mind is to play with their phone. I am so sorry that you are going through this, but hang in there until you find something else.
