Fired without a Reason Being Given
I don't think I am asking a question just venting at this point. I am a woman who is almost 60 years old who happen to work as a Security Officer until a few days ago. I had a steady post at a mall in Las Vegas for the past 3 years. Recently quite a few people have been let go, but so far they had reasons for letting them go, no call no shows, too many write ups, calling off too often. I was at work everyday early, never got written up for anything, never called off. I worked extra days most times when they asked, stayed hours beyond my shift when asked. A few days ago I got called in the office and was told the contract was up for renewal and the mall management did not want me there and as the client is the boss they had to let me go from that post. I was told that I was not being fired from the security company just from the mall post. I asked why, and asked if I had done something wrong. The Security Director claimed he did not know why and he was just the messenger. I think he is full of BS. You see I have had Arthritis in my feet for quite a few years , but in the last year it has gotten worse causing extreme pain walking for 8, 10, or 12 hours. I went to see my VA doctor, but before I went I talked to the Assistant Director and let her know I thought the doctor was going to put restrictions on how much I could walk, I was concerned that I would lose my job, she assured me I would not.I could be made mobile outside. Well the doctors found severe Arthritis, bone spurs and osteoporosis of the bones in my feet and limited me to no more than 2 hours of walking or standing on a shift. I was made a mobile officer. I do not believe the Director was on board with me just being mobile and the Assistant did not ask him before she made this promise. Neither had the guts to say this, so they blamed it on Mall Management.I do also realize since I live in Nevada they don't have to give me a reason to let me go. Needless to say any other post the company currently has would be foot patrol which I cannot do. I am going to try to put a positive spin on this situation. I have been want to start my own business for a while. I flip furniture, also build furniture, make curtains and drapery and will on occasion repair furniture. Just did not have the time. Problem is now I have time but no money to finance such a venture. While I may be able to collect unemployment it will be just enough to cover bills and living expenses. Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

Wow I know that was a hard one to swallow. My suggestion is to look for something part time where u can subsidize the income to maintain the lifestyle. Something in a building front desk post. Good Luck

First of all I'm sorry that you had to go through that. The best thing for you to do is talk to God and pray. Good luck!

Hi,my name is Carrie,I worked for Walmart for almost 3 years,I was moved after the first 2 cause my fiance's daughter is a customer service manager, after management found out that I am hypoglycemic the found an excuse to fire me as well and I am being denied my unemployment cause they made up a bogus excuse of misconduct, before they moved me I had never once had a write up,I never called in,was always early, would stay when they asked me too, would do everything they needed and came in on days off when they called me,I'm struggling right now trying to find a job in my area cause my only experience is in retail or nursing home and I can't get my CNA license back,I know how u feel,I would like to work where I have my nights and weekends off and since I just got a new grand son I want to be able to see him

These people are utterly ruthless. And they have the technology to be ruthless!

I'm In Your Position As I Have Edema And Cannot Stand For Prolonged Periods. Have You Considered Finding A Good Disability Lawyer For Benefits? Andy.

Wow that's totally whrong u need to call the person dats ahead of the person that fired u you was faithful to ur job and for them to do that that's discrimination because by law they suppose to tell u why they fired u and u did an awesome job keep ur head up and god bless u sweetie Ann Clark

As to being let go from the mall, reports are that some 350 malls across the country expect to close this year, due to slackness in the economy, etc. Outside of your control. VA counselors could put you in touch with franchises that hire veterans, or encourage veteran owners.

Hi Anne, sorry for you issues. I think when you showed your weeknes you became expendable. Don't be afraid to start your own business. Do spend until you get orders and its OK to ask for an upfront fee. Good luck

If the client did not want you any longer then there is nothing that you can do...if you are a contract employee you are worse off than even being an at will employee...when you work through a contract company you are not an employee of the client just a temp employee that they can keep or let go at any time...most companies do not want the liability of a security person who is unable to perform the job without limitations...usually security personnel have to be in good health and restriction free...a disabled person cannot perform this kind of job...so either you are able to do your job like the mall would want, or you are unable to...your doctors note put you in the unable category...I know it does not seem fair for you to loose the position but you have become a liability to the client...probably time to leave the security business and find a job which you are physically able to do.
