Expense Analyst at Invesco

Stay at home mom job struggle!

I graduated with a Bachelors in Accounting. Soon after I graduated, i worked for a CPA firm for one year and then i worked for a multi-national investment company for about three years. I had a baby and decided I need to take some time off... fast forward 7 years, I had three more kids. It didn’t make sense to work since my entire paycheck would be going to day care. Now my kids are old enough to be in school and now I am ready to start my career! Only problem is that I am not getting any calls! I know my employment gap is huge but I had a valid reason. I am getting rejection emails from even entry level positions that I am very well qualified to do!

What should I do next?

Try temporary agency like Account Temps, for example. A temporary agency is a great way to get your feet in the door. Know Microsoft Excel, or, you may never get your feet in the door

Okay, Sarah, Hello! My name is Malody. I guess I'm jumping on here to put my 2 cents in. I agree with Sharon, you should look into starting your own small buisness. Right now check the laws in your city and state and if you're comfortable and able you could take some clients on from your home. The reason i suggest it this way is because you may not have the funds to go and open a small buisness and pay for it along with other monthly bills and needs. Now to make it more safe and comfortable for you if you are able to do this have someone you trust who could also maybe be an assistant to you present as well. Someone who who would be able to communicate with others really well. Be able to assist you with things like answering the phone, answering the door. Taking messages, calling clients leaving messages if needed. Helping with filling and typing up paperwork. I suggested it this way so that you're not home alone with someone you don't know. But to also give you a chance to get back in the game. Plus for the clients you take on they may like knowing their with you and not having to share their personal information in an office filled with other people. Talk to your family members, neighbors, friends and see if they will consider letting you do their taxes. Let them know you have professional experience and you're not an amature trying to do this. They could possibly lead to other potential clients. Another possible suggestion. Can you talk to someone from the firm you left and see if they would be willing to hire you back? I just thought i would throw theese 2 suggestions out there.

Senior Account Manager at Cg Commercial Finance

Two ways to handle this is in the cover letter by explaining the job gap. Or, didn't you manage the accounting for the Ahmed firm? Others sometimes start their own business, but it doesn't work out. So they come back to the workforce. Take a job, then place it on your resume. Because the time off is a red flag. Also, network on LinkedIn, so you can approach folks seeking new accountants? Good luck.

Take a refresher course or volunteer just to add some recent “work” to your resume.

Keep it up. Somewhere will give you a chance. Also when applying do you call and follow up on your apps or interviews?

Hi Sarah! I would look to start your own business helping people with their taxes. Most people need help with filing out their taxes especially small business owners .
