References not checked... what to do?!!!??

Hi all, would love anyone’s thoughts on this one! Got an email last week from the hiring manager saying I've made it to the next round in the process and asking for 2-3 references that they would be contacting next week. After receiving that email, I hurriedly contacted my references and told them they would be hearing from someone in the next week.

It's now the next week, Friday. I've reached out to both my references — not one has heard anything from anyone. Radio freaking silence!!

So today I decided to send a follow-up to the hiring manager, asking if there are any status updates. (I didn't mentioned anything about me knowing my references have not been checked). She responded in saying that they are still in the middle of reference checking and will know more next week.

TBH I feel like this was a BS response they are giving me and that I’m just their back-up candidate in case their #1 falls through. You've had the whole week and not one reference has been contacted?!!! It really bothers me on why they would you even ask me for references if the first place... if A) you are not going to contact them and B) I’m only your runner-up candidate. I find it rude and sort of humiliating that I would go to the trouble to contact my references, only for them not to get a call. I guess there’s always a chance that she is going to contact them, but my gut is telling me different…

Opinion Pollist at Self Gary Richardson For Governor

Molly, Perhaps you could call her number and talk directly with her or leave her a detailed message on the status of your application. If you do decide to call her make certain to thank her for the opportunity and the date that you were interviewed by her. Also, let her know that you are very interested in the position and look forward to a call from her soon. She can either call you back or not contact you at all, or she could e-mail you with a response. I did this with the federal job I now have. I called every week until I got a response. You know what? They finally hired me. Sometimes when you want something badly enough you have to be persistent and patient. It took me a total of 4 months to be employed for a temporary position with the Census Bureau, however, it was worth the wait because I love my job! If you do decide to contact her and she does not respond at least you will know and can move on to other employment opportunities.

Hi Molly Martin ! Sometimes these things take time. They may be interviewing other candidates and also may need a week or so to reach out to them. My suggestion is to be patient but keep looking. It's also good you reached out to your references anyway just so they know you are looking and give them a heads up. Keep us posted!!
