Licensed Sales Specialist at American Family Insutance

Unpaid

I was working at a very reputable insurance company here in Lafayette. Verbal agreement upon hire was guaranteed $250 for 17 hours weekly plus commission. I worked a couple of weeks, then had ALL week training session in which l was there every day all week (over double my 17hours) and worked the next week at 17 hours, and then, upon my asking about the extra time l had worked for training, l was told l was not going to be paid for that (owner said that he had told me this at my interview in which he did not). So l did not get paid for that. This same day that he told me this, he was in a bad mood anyway & had gotten pretty stern with me about my sales (which l had barely enough time to even get adjusted to learning their different methods of leads & learn how to actually quote products) which left me shaking my head thinking "l haven't been here long enough for him to come at me like this". To make a bad day worse, he came back from a business luncheon and began very loudly laughing, poking fun at, & putting down people who are on food stamps. Now, l'm not on food stamps but found myself quite offended because l was before back in like 1992. It's not a laughing matter, it's actually quite a struggle! This man is like 6'3" and probably weighs close to 400 lbs, obviously, he hasn't missed any meals... Business owner's usually don't! Many people live pay check to pay check, as do l. I pretty much had my mind made up then that l really didn't want to work for someone so shallow, and someone who doesn't pay their employee's. I've NEVER quit a job without going through the proper channels of giving a 2 week notice but l've never had an employer like him either. I went in to talk to him the next day about my concerns and ended up quitting. Now, by my time worked, there were 2 additional weeks since my last pay (which didn't get deposited on time either) in which l am still owed & it should have been deposited on the 26th of this month, it wasn't. I reached out to him about it and he said that he owes me nothing because l didn't finish out the month. Is this true? Am l screwed because nothing's in writing and it's basically my word against his? He's a liar! Because what he is saying now is NOT what was discussed at the interview before l accepted the job.

Katina. I'm sorry to say but it is his word against yours. it is important to always get everything in writing for moments like this.
