Information that's allowed

So I was filling out an application online for a posted job and once I uploaded my resume and clicked submit another screen appeared asking for information such as Social Security number, Drivers License # and issue state, etc. I was apprehensive to enter this information and therefore the application was not completed. Is it legal to require this information during the application process?

thanks to all of you with the responses...I will do some research on the company especially since it was not encrypted and they were asking for full information not just last 4 digits and full DL number unencrypted as well.

Gilorma, What a awesome name! Yeah, I agree with most posters here. That information should be given AFTER an offer letter is produced. Background information is required now from most companies, but only after they hire you contingent upon passing all of their requirements. Good Luck with your apps. We are all in the same position, filling out apps, sending resumes, waiting on responses. I feel your apprehensions. Thanks for your post!

Glad you went with your gut instinct, I would never give that info online unless #1 it is encrypted and #2 I know specifically what they need it for. Good luck in your job search

Legit companies will not ask for that until they hire you. Do not give it out.

They usually won't ask for them unless a job offer has been made. Better safe than sorry. Look up the company and find the contact info. Look for a email of hr where you can send your resume . I have done this many times and it in some cases got me a quickresponse.
