Avoid jeans at a job fair!

When getting ready for a job fair it’s important to ensure you are ready, and this includes what you're going to wear.

It is NEVER a good idea to wear jeans at a job fair.

Here’s why:

• Many organizations who host the job fairs have a dress code and jeans are a big no, no.

• You will be meeting with multiple companies throughout the day and want to make a great first impression with ALL of them. Dress to impress no matter what!

• Treat this as if you were interviewing for your dream job. Would you show up in jeans for the interview?

• Wearing jeans says to potential employers that you are dressed casually and at a glance, they may decide that you are not a serious candidate versus the next person who IS dressed professionally.

What to wear instead of jeans:

• Dress pants (khakis or dark colored pants) without any stains, holes, rips, and wrinkles. Also, avoid sweatpants and shorts. Think professional dress!

• You can pick up a pair of dress pants at Walmart, Macy's, Target, Kohl's, the Salvation Army, Goodwill, Target, or at any clothing store nearby that works well for you! If you don't want to buy some consider borrowing a pair from a friend or family member for the event.

Wishing you the best of luck in all future job fairs.

Team Lead at Cleveland Clinic Foundation

In cleveland, Ohio there is a program provided by a charity organization or the county assistance, called "Dress for success". They provide business or dress attire at very little or no cost. Even if you are not a recipient of government assistance, I think you are still able to benefit from the program. I dont have much more info than that, but I'm sure some Google searches in your area could help.

Hello Ashley Wilson,

You're so right about being presentable when attending a job fair. You want perspective employers to take you seriously. By being properly dressed, you not only show respect for the event and company representatives but yourself as well. If you look serious then you will be treated seriously. After all, a job is a pretty serious part of ones life. Save the jeans for the celebration with your friends after you land that great job. Great advice as always Ashley!

Kind Regards,

Patrick Coppedge

I have been to a few job fairs, and jeans are usually a bad idea. I wear a dress usually, but I know for guys it can be a little tougher. Ashley has some good ideas here. I wouldn't have thought about borrowing something. Thanks!
