Ultimatum " job or family"

I just wanted to throw this out to see if this sounds to all of you as it did to me. I had work for this company for a little over a year my anniversary was july 5th, i was out sick the week of the 4th due to getting lime disease from a tic bite. I told my work gave them all the proper documents/doctors notes ect. ect. They were pretty understanding said get to feeling better take care of yourself. Then on the 18th my father whos 72 had a massive heart attack but he was stable by the time i had to go to work, so i went into work told my supervisor what was going on and that i might need to take off if anything changes. Then he said to me " you can take off if you think it's necessary but it will cost you your job".... i was dumbfounded i didnt even know how to react. I just said something like "oh ok" with this shocked look on my face as if i was waiting for someone to say "Gotcha! " but no he was dead serious. I ended up quitting within 30 mins. After that. What do you guys think am i in the wrong ?

I don't think you were wrong to feel that upset to the point where you quit. A job no matter what should understand that the health and the health of your family comes first. Your dad having a heart attack is a serious thing. It doesn't sound like that is a place you would want to even be. You were up front with them and honest which I think was the best thing you could have done as for quitting that's such a personal call. Did you speak to HR at all? Were there other factors involved or incidents before this one that upset you? I hope your dad feels better soon and that you find a job that truly appreciates you!

I don't think you are in the wrong, but I do think you are failing to see things from the side of your employer (which, admittedly, can be hard to do). You had been with the company for just 1 year, you were out sick over a holiday week. Then you return and a week or so later you tell them you might need more time off should circumstances with your father change.

I am not sure what your attendance had been like over the course of a year. If you had called in several times, you may have exceeded the number of sick days permissible. A lot of companies use an occurrence system to prevent excessive use of the sick/personal time policy. You may have already exceeded that allotment of time and your boss was just letting you know.

Being sick and facing family issues requiring your attention is not truly your fault, but the business requires you to be there in order for it to run smoothly and remain profitable. If you are out for more than what they budget, you are costing them time and money. Your boss was just letting you know that you were probably over the max threshold. Typically this resets every fiscal/calendar year, or in a rolling period. You should have asked your boss about the attendance policy and find out when/if the occurrences from your past absences would roll off.

Best of luck in your job search!

Your not wrong for being upset, but you did let your emotions take over and quit your job with thinking it out first. I completely understand your father had a massive attack and you want to help him, but I think you and the management could have went it about a better way.
