Why is it that recruiters talk so fast during a phone screening?

I recently did a phone screening with a recruiter. She sent me a list of questions to answer prior to our phone screening. Yet, when we spoke it did not seem as is she had even read my answers. She asked questions, but she spoke so quickly, over what seemed to be a cell phone that I at at times had to ask for clarification..or to repeat the answer. This is a at times a difficult time and stressful time for us on the other end of the phone line.. What can you suggest to improve this process to others?

Nothing wrong with asking someone to slow down. I'm sorry she didn't read your answers, she should have been prepared for your screening.

She was a fluke or from the east - they talk fast even for us Californians. If I get a fast talker I will remind them that they need to slow down a bit. It's go go go and crowds and traffic and hectic for sure - that's why I don't live back there. Clara's advice is spot on as well

They are probably conducting a handful of of phone interview every day so they are skilled at what they want to ask and the time crunch is essential. Remember that the phone interview is all about you so don't be afraid to ask them to slow it down.

I think it's because recruiters are so busy, and they have to get through so much in a day, that they just naturally talk fast. Plus, social people tend to gravitate toward that position, which means they're talk fasters and are just more comfortable on the phone. I don't think it's a bad thing to ask the recruiter to slow down so you can understand - just blame it on a bad phone connection or something.
