Negative or Bad Credit Can Deny A Job
The other day i interviewed over the phone for a job with a company that helps with credit repair. I stared i was very interested and would like to learn more about this so i could also fix my own credit. Despite, what the the big financial gurus you hear on TV or radio say about they make it sound so easy to fix your own credit and past debts, etc., its actually much harder, more costly and could be more complex to fix or remove. In particular, if it was an ex spouse who left several blemishes on it.
You can only do so much when struggling to pay the rent, the car, etc.. Make the ends meet, keep a job and survive. On a ten, eleven and twelve an hour ten hour work day on the job by the end of the day, you will have not much left over to be concerned about investing into fix credit reports. So, i asked the lady interviewing me if credit checks were a consideration in the hiring process. She said they do credit checks but the hiring decision is not based on credit. I thought, if the decision is not based on credit, then why do it? Why do or must employers have to peer into our credit records?. Its a form of discrimination, a way to weed out a prospective job applicant and an outright invasion of privacy. A job applicants credit.. Good, bad, ugly or indifferent has nothing to do with their abilities to perform in a job.
Its outrightly an invasion of personal privacy. Its like an employer checking your medical records for employment which is also illegal. Medical records are protected by the Hippa Act and so too, should our credit records be protected by something similar. So, I accepted what the interviewer had said and the next day i get an email thanking me for my time and how impressed with my interview they were but decided to choose other candidates to meet their needs better. In all, they could have just said it was my credit that was the problem. I strongly believe that was the deciding factor despite what they said. In fact, when i asked about the credit check, she seemed a bit hesitant in telling me when i addressed my concern about it.
So, the point being here, for all of you seeing this, if your credit has issues, do be advised it could very well prevent you from being hired or considered for a job. You can be denied employment based on bad or negative credit reports. Seven states have put laws in place making it illegal for employers to run credit checks on job prospects but its still not enforceable just yet and not every state has this law. Write to your congress representatives, the Legislature and even the President to enforce and pass laws making this practice illegal.
Michelle, credit has been a factor in the hiring process for many companies for many, many years. I'm surprised you didn't know that. It's to measure how responsible you are. There are lots of jobs that don't require credit checks. it simply depends on the industry. Many places don't want you handling money if you owe thousands of dollars. Checking credit is not an invasion of privacy. I'm sorry you didn't get the position, and it may have had nothing to do with your credit. This is a highly competitive job market, and companies will go with the best candidate, in their opinion.
It may not be the credit score itself. Employers may be looking for default accounts to which they would have to deal with garnishments. This is probably something that they do not want to take on when they have the opportunity to avoid it in the beginning.
Check if your state is a Fair employment act. In Washington state. It is. Usually a credit check is for student loan defaults. Also check garnishing for child support.
It's been my experience depending on the level of security and job position, ones credit more often than not says a lot about their character, not necessarily their ability to do the job.Banks,finance companies law enforcement are some of the industries that check credit on all prospective applicants. The rule of thumb being if you're untrustworthy credit wise, there's a greater chance of embezzlement, bribes,or poor decision making when it comes to anything involving money. Example, a loan office making credit decisions when he/she has bad credit or someone in a financial bind is more likely than not make a rash, dishonest decision. That's why in most states insurance companies pull credit bureaus because those with poor credit credit are far more likely to file a claim than someone who isn't.

I would think if you are applying to work for a bank or investing money for client then I could see them pulling your credit but other than that. That’s stupid.
I know that many new people to the work force, like teens have issues getting jobs because of this. No credit score means negative credit my the scoring companies.
Then you add to people like me who have a bad score thanks to student loans. I need a job to pay them off but can't get a job because of the very loans I have to pay off.
You are 100% right I agree with that strongly and we all have something negative on our credit report and one way or another it's a shame how the United States economy has become so crazy crazy when you are being interviewed they want to know your whole damn life history your business isn't their business we just live in such crucial world nobody cares anymore they don't give a damn about your livelihood and if that's the case that job wasn't for you anyway people fail to realize you have to crawl before you walk and you have to walk before you can run either way just give it to God he is the head official no matter what we do or say but please remember this God will never leave you nor forsake you so hold on to his unchanging hands he has the master key people don't see anything until it hits them in the face that's when they realized s*** happens to all of us and all s*** stinks regardless
