How far back should your resume go
As a woman over 50, I have many job experiences and they fall into the retail, office assistant, and teacher's aide catagories. I have always done well at each job and the only reasons I have ever quit a job was due to a transfer of my husband, child raising years, and taking care of elderly parents. To get back in the game how far back do I need to cite in my resume? Also, what about stores that are now closed and the management has scattered . How do I reference situations such as these?

As an unexpected experiment, try to post a WORK AD, of your own!:-). Say that you're a FORTUNE 500 EMPLOYEE of the YEAR, seeking out a WELL-QUALIFIED EMPLOYER, with (such-n'-such)EXPERIENCE, and CREDENTIALS. If you get any hits, maybe others, in this CHATROOM, could help you go, from there?

Hmmmm...I was always told 7 years...and if a person does not have too much working experience, then you should set up your resume with as much working experience that you do have. The problem with that is a person has to make up for the lack of working experiences. For example, attend school or perhaps volunteer somewhere in between jobs. I’m almost sure the interviewer would ask that kind of question if he/she sees that you do not have too much working experiences under your belt. But I see that you do do you should be cool.

I was at James River for 23 yes and left because my husband got transferred to Australia. I was at Detroit Ball Bearing for 10 yrs and Macy's for 19 yrs and both of these ended because of downsizing.

Hi Marsha,
How far you go with your resume, i would go as far as 10 years works for me, especially if you can fit the resume in one page, the most two pages.
As far as retail stores, the hiring period is around the holiday seasons around Christmas season, starting October.
I was hired at Macy's when I was in my 60's.
Best of luck to you!
Eleanor

I'm having the same problem....almost 60...fit and healthy. With most applications online anymore we (over midlife people) senior job seekers are competing with a plethora of young applicants with college degrees. I still like going into places and projecting POSITIVE ENERGY, meeting key hiring personnel with impressionable eye contact and firm handshake! Marsha, focus your cover letter to the key skills experience and employers that would give you a good reference....my employment life began in June, 1976.. I skip over jobs or careers not suited for me....2 of which were during the later 80's recession....both commission sales! Hmmm....maybe I should try it now!!

Hi Marsha. What type of work are you looking for. Functional resume. You may want to look online and find a resume that would fit the type of work. Not dates.

My resume goes back to my Naval services days. I do not think it will hurt

I am 50 + good for you. I go back 10 years. If a business is closed just tell them. You'll be fine at least we have experience. Good luck
